1986 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1986 Embassy World Darts Championship was held between 4–11 January 1986. For the first time, the tournament was held at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley Green, Surrey, having been held at Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent for the previous seven years. The Lakeside became the third venue in the history of the World Championship. Eric Bristow completed a hat-trick of World titles to bring his overall tally to five. He would appear in four more finals – but this was to be his last World title. Lakeside Leisure Complex
The Lakeside Leisure Complex is a hotel, conferencing, entertainment and associated leisure complex in Frimley Green in west Surrey. It hosted in January the open/men's and women's BDO World Darts Championship from 1986 to 2019. History The complex was established in 1972, when Bob Potter (born 1928) bought Wharfenden House and the surrounding grounds and lake. He soon doubled the hall to 1,000 seats principally for hosting comedians and musicians, including North American and internationally acclaimed acts. The Lakeside had a fire later that decade and re-opened. During the 25th year of hosting the World Darts Championship, in 2010 the lake had largely iced over by 7 January. That day the body of a man, a hotel guest for the competition week, was found. Landowner-managers, Bob Potter Leisure Limited, were fined £85,000 for health and safety violations. Keith Deller
Keith Kelvin Deller (born 24 December 1959) is an English former professional darts player best known for winning the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship and Unipart British Professional Championship in 1987. He was the first qualifier ever to win the championship and remains one of the youngest champions in history. For his world championship win, Deller used 18-gram spring-loaded darts, later banned for tournament play but now legal again. Career BDO Deller's victory over Eric Bristow in the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship by 6 sets to 5 was probably the biggest upset in the history of the championship. He had also beaten world number 3 John Lowe in the quarter finals and defending champion and world number 2 Jocky Wilson in the semi-final to become the only player in history to defeat the world's top three ranked players in the World Championship. Dave Lee (darts Player)
David Lee is a retired English professional darts player who competed in British Darts Organisation events in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Career Lee made his World Professional Darts Championship debut in 1983, defeating Canada's Tony Holyoake in the first round before losing in the second round to Eric Bristow. After a first round exit in 1985, Lee made it to the second round in 1986 and 1987. Lee made a total of four appearances in the World Championship but never made it to the quarter-finals. Lee also played in the Winmau World Masters five times with his best run coming in 1983, reaching the semi-finals with notable wins over then World Champion Keith Deller and Bob Anderson, eventually losing to Mike Gregory. Bob Sinnaeve
Robert "Bob" Sinnaeve (born October 10, 1949) is a Canadian former professional darts player. Early career Sinnaeve took up darts in 1973 as an alternative to bowling, as he felt the darts circuit would give him more time to spend with his wife, Judy. He first appeared at the World Masters in 1979 and made his World Professional Darts Championship debut in 1982, but lost in the first round to Alan Evans. World Championship record Sinnaeve appeared at the World Championship on ten occasions, but managed to win only three matches in that time. He lost in the first round on his first four attempts (1982, 1984, 1985 and 1986), and finally won a match in 1987, producing a major upset by beating Dave Whitcombe, who reached the final in the previous year. Alan Glazier
Alan James Glazier (21 January 1939 – 12 November 2020) was an English professional darts player. He used the nickname "The Ton Machine" and was noted for his all-black outfits. Career Glazier was one of the first darts players who turned professional in an attempt to make a full-time living from the game of darts as it grew in popularity during the 1970s. He was one of the players who appeared in the very first World Professional Darts Championship in 1978, losing to Alan Evans in the first round. In 1979, he reached the quarter-finals at the World Championship before being beaten by Tony Brown. Glazier then had a disappointing run as he went out in the first round of the World Championship in 1980, 1982 and 1983, and did not make it to the 1981 Championships. Mike Gregory (darts Player)
Michael Seward "Mike" Gregory (16 December 1956 – 19 April 2022) was an English professional darts player, who reached the final of the Winmau World Masters twice and also reached the final of the Embassy World Darts Championship in 1992 – losing to Phil Taylor in a match regarded amongst the greatest matches ever played. Darts career Gregory was one of the top ranked players from the mid-1980s through to the early 1990s, having been seeded in the top four at the World Championships on seven occasions – although he never won the World title. His major breakthrough was beating John Lowe in the semi-finals of the 1983 British Open in which he finished runner-up to Eric Bristow. Bill Steinke
Bill Steinke is a Canadian former professional darts player who competed in the 1980s. His first major win was the British Columbia Open in 1983. Between 1983 and 1986, he won every major tournament on the west coast of Canada and the United States including the Klondike Open, Seattle Open, Oregon Open, San Francisco Open and the St. Pat's Classic in San Diego. Peter Locke (darts Player)
Peter Locke is a Welsh former professional darts player. Darts career Locke made his World Championship debut in the 1983 BDO World Darts Championship, losing in the first round to Terry O'Dea. A year later in the 1984 BDO World Darts Championship, he reached the quarter-finals, defeating Russell Stewart in the first round and then Malcolm Davies in the second round before losing to the eventual champion Eric Bristow in a 5-0 whitewash. In the 1985 BDO World Darts Championship, he lost in the first round to Fred McMullan. Locke then reached the final of the 1985 British Open, losing to John Cosnett. Paul Lim
Paul Lim Leong Hwa (born 25 January 1954) is a Singaporean professional darts player. He was the first player to hit a perfect nine-dart finish during the Embassy World Darts Championship, which he achieved in 1990 during his second round match against Jack McKenna. Lim won £52,000 for his nine-darter, which was £28,000 more than Phil Taylor won for winning the tournament. His nine-darter remained the only nine-dart game to have been achieved in either version of the world championships, until Raymond van Barneveld hit one against Jelle Klaasen in the quarter-final of the 2009 PDC World Darts Championship. Russell Stewart
Russell "Rusty" Stewart (born 9 October 1960 in Melbourne) is an Australian former professional darts player. He used the nickname Rusty for his matches. Playing career Stewart was one of the most successful Australian darts players of the 1980s, Australian Singles Champion four times (1988, 1989, 1993 and 1994), also Pacific Masters Champion three times (1983, 1984, 1990), winning the Australian Masters five times in six years (1983, 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988) and the Australian Grand Masters six times in three different decades (1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1993, 2001). Alan Evans (darts Player)
David "Alan" Evans (14 June 1949 – 12 April 1999) was a Welsh professional darts player and former World No. 1 who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Evans was one of the early faces of television darts and had some tournament success in the 1970s, including scoring the first televised 180 in the 1973 Indoor League semi final. By the time that darts had gained major popularity in the early 1980s, Evans's form had faded and he wasn't in the limelight as much as Eric Bristow, John Lowe and Jocky Wilson, all of whom found fame and success from the game.
