1985–86 WHL Season
The 1985–86 WHL season was the 20th season for the Western Hockey League. Fourteen teams completed a 72-game season. The Kamloops Blazers won the President's Cup. Western Hockey League
The Western Hockey League (WHL) is a major junior ice hockey league based in Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. The WHL is one of three leagues that constitutes the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) as the highest level of junior hockey in Canada. Teams play for the Ed Chynoweth Cup, with the winner moving on to play for the Memorial Cup, Canada's national junior championship. WHL teams have won the Memorial Cup 19 times since the league became eligible to compete for the trophy. Many players have been drafted from WHL teams, and have found success at various levels of professional hockey, including the National Hockey League (NHL). New Westminster Bruins
The New Westminster Bruins were a major junior ice hockey team in the Western Hockey League. There were two franchises that carried this name: * 1971–1981 (formerly the Estevan Bruins, now the Kamloops Blazers) * 1983–1988 (formerly the Nanaimo Islanders, now the Tri-City Americans) Both incarnations of the franchise played at Queen's Park Arena in the Vancouver suburb of New Westminster, British Columbia. Mark Francis Janssens (born May 19, 1968) is a Canadian retired ice hockey forward. Janssens started his National Hockey League career with the New York Rangers in 1989. He also played for the Minnesota North Stars, Hartford Whalers, Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, New York Islanders, Phoenix Coyotes, and Chicago Blackhawks. He left the NHL after the 2001 season. Emanuel "Manny" Viveiros (born January 8, 1966) is a Canadian-Austrian professional ice hockey coach and former player. Vivieros is currently the head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League. He is former head coach of the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League (WHL), an assistant coach for the Edmonton Oilers and head coach of the WHL's Swift Current Broncos. Playing career As a youth, Viveiros played in the 1979 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from St. Albert, Alberta. Four Broncos Memorial Trophy
The Four Broncos Memorial Trophy is awarded each year to the Western Hockey League's Player of the Year. The trophy is named in honour of four members of the Swift Current Broncos who were killed on December 30, 1986 in the Swift Current Broncos bus crash: Trent Kresse, Scott Kruger, Chris Mantyka, and Brent Ruff. Raymond Sidney Podloski (January 5, 1966 – May 29, 2018) was a Canadian-Austrian professional ice hockey player.
