1985 Football League Cup Final
The 1985 Football League Cup Final was won by Norwich City. The Canaries defeated Sunderland 1–0 at Wembley Stadium on 24 March 1985 with an own goal scored by Gordon Chisholm, who deflected Asa Hartford's shot past goalkeeper Chris Turner. Later in the second half, Clive Walker missed a penalty awarded for a handball by Norwich defender Dennis van Wijk. Looking back on the final, Norwich striker Mick Channon described the final as a "lovely day", and praised his teammates' skill, saying, "we had some tremendous players like Steve Bruce and Dave Watson in the middle of the defence, Asa Hartford in midfield and John Deehan up front with me." In the lead-up to Norwich's goal Sunderland defender David Corner was attempting to usher the ball out of play for a Sunderland goal kick. However, Norwich kept the ball in play and promptly scored. 1984–85 Football League Cup
The 1984–85 Football League Cup (known as the Milk Cup for sponsorship reasons) was the 25th season of the Football League Cup, a knockout competition for England's top 92 football clubs. The competition began on 27 August 1984, and ended with the final on 24 March 1985 at the Old Wembley Stadium. The cup was won by Norwich City, who beat Sunderland 1–0 in the final. An own goal from Sunderland's Gordon Chisholm gave Norwich the victory. At the end of the 1984–85 league season both Norwich and Sunderland were relegated to the Second Division. There was serious violence and a pitch invasion by some home supporters at the Stamford Bridge leg of the Chelsea-Sunderland semi-final, and although Norwich initially thought they had won a place in the 1985–86 UEFA Cup, they were denied what would have been their first season of European football by the ban that followed the Heysel Stadium disaster. Football League Second Division
The Football League Second Division was the second level division in the English football league system between 1892 and 1992. Following the foundation of the FA Premier League, the Football League divisions were renumbered and the third tier became known as the Football League Second Division. After the rebranding of the Football League in 2003–04, it became known as Football League One. Early history In 1888, Scotsman William McGregor a director of Aston Villa, was the main force between meetings held in London and Manchester involving 12 football clubs, with an eye to a league competition. Ken Brown (footballer Born 1934)
Kenneth Brown (born 16 February 1934) is an English former football player and manager. As player, he made more than 400 appearances in the Football League representing West Ham United, where he spent the majority of his career, and Torquay United, and was capped once for the England national team. As manager, he took charge of Norwich City, Shrewsbury Town and Plymouth Argyle. Playing career Brown was playing for local Dagenham side Neville United when he signed professional for West Ham United on 16 October 1951. He quickly made his way into the reserve side, but first team football was much harder to come by, his debut eventually coming in February 1953 against Rotherham United as a replacement for Malcolm Allison. John Devine (footballer, Born 1958)
John Anthony Devine (born 11 November 1958) is an Irish former footballer and manager/coach. Devine began his career with English club Arsenal along with a number of fellow Irish apprentices, He progressed through the youth ranks at Highbury and played in the 1980 FA Cup final defeat against West Ham United. In 1983, he signed for Norwich City. He spent two years at Carrow Road making 69 appearances and was an unused substitute in the 1985 Football League Cup final. In the summer of 1985 he signed for Stoke City but after making 16 appearances he broke his leg. He later spent time abroad playing in Norway for IK Start and in India with East Bengal before returning home in 1989 to play for Shamrock Rovers. Louie Donowa
Brian Louie Donowa (born 24 September 1964) is an English former professional footballer who played as a winger. He made nearly 400 appearances for a variety of clubs in the Football League and also played in several other European countries. Playing career Born in Ipswich, Suffolk, Donowa began his career with Norwich City. He was a member of the Norwich youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 1983 and the side that won the League Cup in 1985. He was capped by England under-21s during his time at Carrow Road. John Deehan
John Matthew Deehan (born 6 August 1957) is an English former football manager and player. During his playing career he was a footballer from 1975 until 1990 and is most well known for his spells as a striker for Aston Villa and Norwich City. He also played for West Bromwich Albion, Ipswich Town, Manchester City and Barnsley. He was also capped seven times at England U21 level, scoring six goals. Since retiring Deehan initially returned to Norwich as a coach and had a spell as manager during their 1994/95 Premier League campaign before later managing Wigan Athletic to a Division Three title and a caretaker spell in charge of Aston Villa. He has since held roles as the director of football of Northampton Town, Lincoln City, Grimsby Town and Plymouth Argyle, as well as actively being part of the coaching staff at Kettering Town and Sheffield Wednesday. Mark Barham
Mark Francis Barham (born 12 July 1962) is an English former professional footballer who played as a right-winger. Barham was a product of the Norwich City youth team, having signed him from his local club Folkestone and Shepway, and made his debut in the 1979–80 season against Manchester United. He played 213 times for Norwich and scored 25 times. While with the club he was capped twice by England on their 1983 trip to Australia. He was a member of the Norwich sides that won the League Cup in 1985 and the Second Division championship in 1986. Dave Watson
David Watson (born 20 November 1961) is an English football manager and former professional footballer. As a player, he was a defender from 1980 to 2001. He played his entire career for Norwich City and Everton. With the Toffees he played in the Premier League and was part of their victorious FA Cup winning team of 1995. He was capped 12 appearances for the England national team. In 1997, Watson had a spell in caretaker charge of Everton although he would not retire for another four years, in which he moved into coaching and was appointed first team manager at Tranmere Rovers for the 2001–2002 season. He later spent time coaching in Wigan Athletic's youth academy before taking up a similar role with Newcastle United. Peter Mendham
Peter Stanley Mendham (born 9 April 1960) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder for Norwich City. He was played in the side that won the Milk Cup in 1985. In February 2007, he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for wounding with intent his girlfriend. His sentence was later reduced to five years. In 2011, he returned to football as assistant manager at Newmarket Town F.C. Career Mendham came through the youth ranks at Carrow Road, and played 267 first-team games (211 in the league), and scored 29 goals for the Canaries. He was forced to retire because of injury in 1987. He was a member of the Norwich teams that won the Football League Cup in 1985, and the Second Division championship in 1986. Steve Bruce
Stephen Roger Bruce (born 31 December 1960) is an English professional football manager and former player who played as a centre-back. He most recently managed West Bromwich Albion. Born in Corbridge, Northumberland, he was a promising schoolboy footballer but was rejected by several professional clubs. He was on the verge of quitting the game altogether when he was offered a trial with Gillingham. Bruce was offered an apprenticeship and went on to play more than 200 games for the club before joining Norwich City in 1984, winning the League Cup in 1985. In 1987, he moved to Manchester United, with whom he achieved great success, winning twelve trophies including three Premier League titles, three FA Cups, one League Cup and the European Cup Winners' Cup. Paul Haylock
Paul Haylock (born 24 March 1963) is an English former professional footballer. Career Haylock, a full-back, came through the youth system at Norwich City and was part of the Norwich team that won promotion to Division One in 1982 and won the Football League Cup at Wembley Stadium in 1985. He played 193 games for Norwich before the arrival of Ian Culverhouse displaced him from the side. He went on to play for Gillingham, where he was a crowd favourite (gaining the nickname "Pud" due to his slightly portly build) and a member of the side which reached the promotion play-offs in the 1986–87 season. In a League Cup match against Brighton & Hove Albion, Gills goalkeeper Phil Kite was sent off, and Haylock, despite being the shortest player in the team, took over in goal.
