The 1985 Australian Swimming Championships were held at the Melbourne State Swimming Centre from Thursday 21 February to Sunday 24 February. Australian Swimming Championships
The Australian Swimming Championships is the national Swimming championships for Australia. They are organised by Swimming Australia and separate championships are held annually in both long course (50m) and short course (25m) pools. The two meets are the country's top domestic meet for their respective course. The meet usually also double as a selection event for international competitions such as the: Olympics, Paralympics, World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships. Some consider the meet the second-toughest domestic competition in the world, behind the USA's national championships. The first edition of the championships was held in Sydney in January 1896 with events at the Natatorium, Sutherland Dock (Cockatoo Island) and on the Hawkesbury River. The state that wins the most points at the championships is awarded the Kieran Shield, named in memory of Barney B. Tom Stachewicz
Thomas Stachewicz (born 5 December 1965) is a former freestyle and backstroke swimmer, who represented Australia at three Summer Olympics. Stachewicz made his Olympic debut in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, where he competed in the heats of the Men's 4×200-metre freestyle relay. The Australian 4×200-metre relay team recorded national records in both the preliminaries and final, finishing with a time of 7 minutes 25.63 seconds, 0.85 of a second behind third place Great Britain. Stachewicz swam the preliminary only at this meet. At the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, Stachewicz was part of the gold medal-winning men's 4×200-metre freestyle relay team. He also won bronze in the men's 200-metre freestyle. Steven G. Clarke, (born November 19, 1949) an American biochemist, is a director of the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute, a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UCLA biochemistry department. Clarke heads a laboratory at UCLA's department of chemistry and biochemistry. Clarke is famous for his work on molecular damage and discoveries of novel molecular repair mechanisms. Clarke has been on the faculty of the UCLA Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1978. He is currently a professor of biochemistry and director of the UCLA Molecular Biology Institute. Peter Gee (swimmer)
Peter Gee (1932–2005) was a British-born artist and developer who spent most of his life living and working in New York City. He was active in the pop art movement of the 60s. Biography Gee was born on July 23, 1932, in Leicestershire, England. He was interested in drawing as a child and worked as a graphic designer for the British army when he joined at the age of 18. By the end of the 50s, he had exhibited at the Denise Rene Gallery in Paris, where he lived briefly, and the Axiom Gallery in London. He came to the US in 1962. Throughout the 60s, Gee experienced a high degree of success as a pop artist in Manhattan. His work from this era has been collected by The Museum of Modern Art in both New York City and Kyoto, The Smithsonian and the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., and The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Paul Rowe (swimmer)
Paul Colin Rowe is a New Zealand-born Australian former swimmer of the 1970s and 1980s. Born in New Zealand, Rowe won national titles in his native country for butterfly and freestyle. He represented New Zealand at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, coming fourth in the 100 metre butterfly. Rowe came to Australia in 1979 for training in the lead up to the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where he had been due to swim for the New Zealand delegation. New Zealand ended up boycotting the games and in 1981 he became a naturalised Australian. At the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, he was a member of the Australian gold medal-winning freestyle relay team, as well as a silver medalist in the 200 metre butterfly. Michael Delany
Michael William Delany (born 22 August 1965) is an Australian former sprint freestyle swimmer of the 1980s, who won a silver medal in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Delany was best known for being a member of the so-called "Mean Machine". Debuting at the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Delany combined with Neil Brooks, Greg Fasala and Graeme Brewer to claim gold in the 4×100-metre freestyle relay, gaining their nickname after three of them collectively shaving their heads for the race. In the individual event, he claimed bronze behind Brooks and Fasala. In Los Angeles, he competed in the relay, combining with Fasala, Brooks and Mark Stockwell to claim silver behind the United States team.
