Downhill (ski Competition)
Downhill is a form of alpine skiing competition. Whereas the other alpine skiing events (Slalom skiing, slalom, Giant slalom skiing, giant slalom, Super Giant Slalom skiing, super giant slalom, and alpine skiing combined, combined) emphasize turning and technique, downhill emphasizes "the six components of technique, courage, speed, risk, physical condition and judgement", according to the International Ski Federation, FIS "International Ski Competition Rules (ICR)".. Jana Gantnerová-Šoltýsová (born 30 September 1959 in Kežmarok) is a Slovak former alpine skier who competed for Czechoslovakia in the 1976 Winter Olympics, 1980 Winter Olympics, and 1984 Winter Olympics. In December 1980, she won an Alpine Skiing World Cup downhill in Altenmarkt, becoming the first east European skier to win a World Cup race. Her best performance at the Olympics was a fifth place in the downhill in 1984. Since retiring from competition, she has served as president of the Slovak Skiing Association, as a member of the Slovak Olympic Committee Executive Board, as a member of the International Ski Federation Alpine Commission, and as Deputy Chef de Mission for the Slovak team at the 2010 Winter Olympics. Karla Delago (born 8 February 1965) is a former Italian World Cup alpine ski racer, and specializes in the speed events, winner of six Italian titles in just four years in which she competed. Irene Epple-Waigel (; born 18 June 1957) is a German former alpine skier. She won a total of 11 Alpine Skiing World Cup races and two World Cups, in giant slalom and combined (both in 1982). She also won a silver medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games in giant slalom. In the 1978 FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships at Garmisch-Partenkirchen she won the silver medal in the downhill. On 9 January 1983 she won the first women's World Cup Super-G race, held in Verbier. Debra Rae "Debbie" Armstrong (born December 6, 1963) is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from Seattle, Washington. She was the first gold medalist from the U.S. in women's alpine skiing in 12 years, winning the giant slalom at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia.
