1984–85 Michigan Wolverines Men's Basketball Team
The 1984–85 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team represented the University of Michigan in intercollegiate college basketball during the 1984–85 season. The team played its home games in the Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and was a member of the Big Ten Conference. Under the direction of head coach Bill Frieder, the team won the Big Ten Conference by a four game margin. The team earned the number one seed in the 1985 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament where it advanced one round before losing. Although the team began the season unranked it was in the Associated Press Top Twenty Poll a total of twelve of the seventeen weeks, including a peak of number two where it ended the season, and it also ended the season ranked number two in the final UPI Coaches' Poll. Bill Frieder
William Samuel Frieder (born March 3, 1942) is a former basketball coach at Michigan (1981–1989) and Arizona State (1989–1997). Frieder's 1985–86 team was the last Michigan team to win a Big Ten Championship until the 2011–12 team. Just before the 1989 NCAA tournament, Frieder announced that he would leave Michigan for Arizona State at the end of the season. Michigan athletic director Bo Schembechler ordered Frieder to leave immediately, and named top assistant Steve Fisher as the interim coach for the tournament. Schembechler famously announced, "A Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man." The Wolverines went on to win the tournament and Fisher was officially given the head coaching job. The 1984–85 Fairleigh Dickinson Knights men's basketball team represented Fairleigh Dickinson University during the 1984–85 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The team was led by second-year head coach Tom Green. The Knights played their home games at the FDU Gym in Hackensack, New Jersey as members of the ECAC Metro Conference. The Knights compiled a 21–10 record and went 10–4 in ECAC Metro play to finish in second place. They defeated Robert Morris, Long Island, and Loyola (MD) to capture the ECAC Metro tournament championship as the 2-seed. Led by head coach Gene Keady, the team played their home games at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana. Blocked Shot
In basketball, a block or blocked shot occurs when a defensive player legally deflects a field goal attempt from an offensive player to prevent a score. The defender is not allowed to make contact with the offensive player's hand (unless the defender is also in contact with the ball) or a '' foul'' is called. In order to be legal, the block must occur while the shot is traveling upward or at its apex. A deflected field goal that is made does not count as a blocked shot and simply counts as a successful field goal attempt for shooter plus the points awarded to the shooting team. For the shooter, a blocked shot is counted as a missed field goal attempt. Also, on a shooting foul, a blocked shot cannot be awarded or counted, even if the player who deflected the field goal attempt is different from the player who committed the foul. Rickey Green
Rickey Green (born August 18, 1954) is an American retired professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Green, a and point guard, led Chicago's Hirsch High School to the 1973 IHSA Class AA State championship. He then played college basketball at Vincennes University and the University of Michigan; at the latter school, his team lost to the undefeated Big Ten Conference rival Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game of the 1976 NCAA tournament. He then led the 1976–77 Wolverines to the Big Ten regular season championship, earning 1977 All-American recognition. Green was selected with the 16th pick in the 1977 NBA draft, and competed in 14 seasons, playing for the Golden State Warriors, Detroit Pistons, Utah Jazz, Charlotte Hornets, Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, Philadelphia 76ers, and Boston Celtics. Eric Turner (basketball)
Eric Clifton Turner (born February 7, 1963) is an American retired professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Michigan Wolverines. Career A playmaker out of the University of Michigan, Turner averaged 14.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists in 85 games from 1981–82 through 1983–84 and was a three-year starter. He was chosen by the Detroit Pistons on the second round of the 1984 NBA Draft as a junior eligible. Turner was a member of the USA team that won the bronze medal in the 1983 World University games in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Turner has never played in the NBA but played with the CBA's Detroit Spirits in 1984–85 and 1985–86 and unsuccessfully tried out with the Houston Rockets in the summer of 1985.
