1984–85 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1984–85 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 59th season of the Hawks' existence. Offseason Long-time goalie Tony Esposito retired from the team after a 16-year career in the NHL. Esposito had been with the Black Hawks in his entire career, appearing in 873 games, and earning a 418-302-147 record with a 2.93 GAA and 74 shutouts. On June 9, the Black Hawks traded away goaltender Bob Janecyk, their first round, sixth overall pick, as well as their third and fourth round draft picks in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for the Kings first round, third overall draft pick and their fourth round pick in the draft. By moving up three spots in the draft, the Black Hawks drafted local prospect Ed Olczyk. 1984 NHL Entry Draft
The 1984 NHL Entry Draft was the 22nd NHL Entry Draft. It took place on June 9, 1984, at the Montreal Forum in Montreal, Quebec. The 1984 Entry Draft is noted for the unusually high number of future Hall of Famers picked, particularly in lower rounds. In addition to Mario Lemieux being taken first overall, Patrick Roy was chosen in the third round, Brett Hull in the sixth, and Luc Robitaille in the ninth. In addition, Lemieux, Gary Suter and Robitaille would all go on to win the Calder Memorial Trophy, Lemieux in 1985, Suter in 1986, and Robitaille in 1987, making this a rare draft in which multiple Rookie of the Year winners were produced. Bob Murray (ice Hockey, Born 1954)
Robert Frederick Murray (born November 26, 1954) is a Canadian professional ice hockey executive and former player. He most recently served as the general manager of the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League. Murray played in the NHL from 1975 to 1990 as a defenceman with the Chicago Black Hawks. He player for the Cornwall Royals of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) from 1971 to 1974, where he won a Memorial Cup, before the Black Hawks drafted him 52nd overall in the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft. Doug Wilson (ice Hockey)
Douglas Frederick Wilson (born July 5, 1957) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman, who later served as general manager of the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. Playing career After a junior hockey career for the Ottawa 67's in the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, Wilson was drafted in the first round, sixth overall, in the 1977 NHL Entry Draft. He then played 14 seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks and two years for the San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League. He was the first captain in Sharks history, serving two years before retiring after the 1992–93 season. Atlanta Flames
The Atlanta Flames were a professional ice hockey team based in Atlanta from 1972 until 1980. They played home games in the Omni Coliseum and were members of the West and later Patrick divisions of the National Hockey League (NHL). Along with the New York Islanders, the Flames were created in 1971 as part of the NHL's conflict with the rival World Hockey Association (WHA). The team enjoyed modest success on the ice, qualifying for the playoffs in six of its eight seasons, but failed to win a playoff series and won only two post-season games total. The franchise struggled to draw fans and, after averaging only 10,000 per game in the early years of 1979–80, was sold and relocated to Alberta to become the Calgary Flames. Lady Byng Trophy
The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, formerly known as the Lady Byng Trophy, is presented each year to the National Hockey League "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability". The Lady Byng Memorial Trophy has been awarded 88 times to 53 different players since it was first awarded in 1925. The original trophy was donated to the league by Lady Byng of Vimy, then–viceregal consort of Canada. Bob MacMillan
Robert Lea MacMillan (born December 3, 1952) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey forward and a former politician who served in the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island. During his hockey career, he played two seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA), followed by eleven seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL), from 1974–75 until 1984–85. Hockey career As a youth, MacMillan played in the 1964 and 1965 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with a minor ice hockey team from Charlottetown. He was drafted 15th overall by the New York Rangers in the 1972 NHL Amateur Draft. Upon his retirement, MacMillan returned to Charlottetown to coach senior hockey. The New Jersey Devils are a professional sports, professional ice hockey team based in Newark, New Jersey. The Devils compete in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Metropolitan Division in the Eastern Conference (NHL), Eastern Conference. Rich Preston
Richard John "Rich" Preston (born May 22, 1952) is a Canadian ice hockey coach and former forward. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Preston began his professional career in the World Hockey Association in the 1974-75 season with the Avco World Trophy champion Houston Aeros. He then played three more years with the Aeros before joining the Winnipeg Jets in 1978-79. The Jets won the Avco World Trophy in 1979 (the league's final year) and Preston was named Most Valuable Player of the WHA playoffs. Preston started his National Hockey League career with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1980. He also played for the New Jersey Devils. He left the NHL after the 1987 season. Preston was an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames from the 2003-2004 NHL season until just after the 2008-2009 NHL season. Don Dietrich (ice Hockey)
Donald Armond Dietrich (April 5, 1961 – February 16, 2021) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who played 28 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks and New Jersey Devils between 1983 and 1986,. He was selected 183rd overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1980 NHL Entry Draft. He joined the Hawks for 17 games in 1983–84, recording five assists, but spent most of his time in the Chicago organization in the minor leagues. He was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1985 along with Rich Preston for Bob MacMillan. He appeared in 11 games with the Devils in 1985–86 before spending four years playing in West Germany.
