Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPHL) was an organisation with businesses in property and aged care in Singapore. Since its takeover by Cuscaden Peak in 2022, it has been renamed Cuscaden Peak Investments. Prior to 1 December 2021, SPHL was in the media business as well with a reach in the print, digital, radio, and outdoor media. It formed part of a duopoly on the mass media of Singapore, with the other player being Mediacorp. SPHL had over 4,000 employees, including a team of approximately 1,000 journalists, including correspondents operating around the world. 2,500 of the staff, including the journalists and its media business were subsequently transferred to SPH Media Trust. Kendrick Lee Yen Hui
Kendrick Lee Yen Hui (; born 8 October 1984) is a Singaporean former badminton player. Lee was ranked fourteen, his highest ranking, in 2007. He was a two-time national champion. Career Lee was a two-time men's singles national champion of 2000 and 2005. He was the youngest to ever win the title when he won his first, at the age of 15. Lee was the silver medalists at the 2002 World Junior Championships, became the first Singaporean to reach the World Junior finals. He competed at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, and was part of the team that clinched the silver medal. In 2003, he finished as the semi-finalists at the Polish International and Malaysia Satellite tournament. Lee won his first senior international title at the 2004 Mauritius International in the mixed doubles event partnered with Li Yujia. Gerald Koh (许国欢, born 19 September 1984), better known by his stage name Boy Thunder, is a Singaporean radio personality. He once worked as a radio host for Singapore-based music station Hot FM 91.3 and hosted the evening show ''Taking You Home'' with Adam Piperdy and Joshua Simon from 4 - 7.30pm. Zhang Zhenhuan (actor)
Zhang Zhen Xuan (; born 2 February 1984) is a Chinese actor, formerly based in Singapore and was named as one of the 8 Dukes of Caldecott Hill. He was prominently a full-time Mediacorp artiste from 2008 to 2018. He changed his name to Zhang Zhenxuan, saying that his past name was complicated. Early life Zhang was born in Sichuan, China and moved to Singapore as a teenager. He graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in civil engineering. 1984 Singapore General Election
General elections were held in Singapore on 22 December 1984. President Devan Nair dissolved parliament on 4 December 1984 on the advice of Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. The result was a victory for the People's Action Party, which won 77 of the 79 seats, marking the first time since 1963 that at least one opposition candidate was elected to parliament in a general election, although the first presence of an opposition MP was in the 1981. Background In his 1983 National Day Rally speech, Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew lamented that declining birth rates and large number of graduate women remaining single or not marrying their intellectual equal could see Singapore's talent pool shrink. The 1984 AFC Asian Cup was the 8th edition of the men's AFC Asian Cup, a quadrennial international football tournament organised by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The finals were hosted by Singapore between 1 December and 16 December 1984. The field of ten teams was split into two groups of five. Saudi Arabia won their first title, beating China in the final 2–0. Qualification 21 teams competed in qualifying for the 1984 AFC Asian Cup with the teams being separated into three groups of five teams and one group of six. The top two of each group would qualify through to the Asian Cup as they would join Singapore and Kuwait who automatically qualified. Eat Frozen Pork
The Eat Frozen Pork campaign in Singapore was initiated by the Singapore government in late 1984 as a means of encouraging Singaporeans to partake in frozen, as opposed to fresh, pig meat. Targeted at predominantly Singaporean Chinese, the campaign tied in with the shutting down or relocation of all pig farms in the country. The government's initiative was not considerably successful, with mixed reaction from the people. In 2008 it was brought back and subsumed under the Frozen Meat Public Education Programme. Background Singapore once had a burgeoning pork industry, which used to yield S$300,000,000 annually. By 1985, there were at least 520 pig farms situated within the island-state, to keep up with the citizens' demand for fresh pork. Most of the consumers were of Chinese ethnicity.
