1984 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1984 New Zealand National Soccer League was the 15th season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Gisborne City finally wrestled the trophy away from the major centres, taking it to a provincial city for the first time.Hilton (1991), p. 180 Promotion and relegation Dunedin Technical did not apply for re-entry to the league, so the resumption of play-offs for league places was simply between the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues (Auckland University, Stop Out, and Rangers respectively). Auckland University were victorious, entering the national league for the first time. Team performance Gisborne City produced a marked improvement on their previous efforts, becoming the first team from outside Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch to take the title. Dunedin City is a former New Zealand football club based in the South Island city of Dunedin. Dunedin City was founded in 1909 as Dunedin High School Old Boys, and changed their name to Dunedin City in 1970. Colin Walker (footballer Born 1958)
Colin Walker (born 1 May 1958) is a former professional footballer and manager who is head of coaching at EFL League Two side Grimsby Town. As a player he was a striker who notably played in the Football League for Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Cambridge United, Sheffield Wednesday, Darlington and Torquay United. He also spent time playing in New Zealand with three spells at Gisborne City. He also played non-league football for Retford Town, Matlock Town and Harworth Colliery Institute. Walker was capped 15 times by New Zealand between 1984 and 1988, scoring 10 goals. He had obtained citizenship during his time spent playing in the country. As a manager Walker took charge of Gisborne City in 1988 before moving on to manage non-league side Maltby Miners Welfare. He later had coaching roles at Barnsley and Leeds United whilst also working for Rugby Union side Rotherham Titans. University-Mount Wellington is an association football club in Auckland, New Zealand. It was formed from the amalgamation of University AFC and Mount Wellington AFC. The team play at Bill McKinlay Park, Panmure, Auckland. Club history During much of the 1970s and 1980s, Mt Wellington AFC was a strong club side, rivalled only by Christchurch United. Napier City Rovers is a football team based in Napier, New Zealand, competing in the Central Premier League. Club history The team was founded in 1973 via a merger of Napier Rovers and Napier City. Napier City Rovers have won New Zealand's premier knockout football competition (the Chatham Cup) five times, in 1985, 1993, 2000, 2002, and 2019 won the old New Zealand National Soccer League in 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2000. They represented New Zealand at the Oceania Club Championship in 2001, finishing third. Wellington United AFC is an association football club based in Wellington, New Zealand, that competes in the Central League. History Wellington Diamond United Wellington Diamond United was the result of the merger of Diamond and Zealandia/Wellington United in 1968. Diamond was founded as a junior football club in 1893 by members of the Star Rugby Club, who wished to play football. It became a senior team in 1895. Zealandia was founded in 1954 by Dutch immigrants, changing its name to Wellington United in 1964. In 1968 the club played in the Central Region's Division One, finishing fourth out ten. The club is one of the most successful in New Zealand having won the Chatham Cup four times and the National League title twice. Manurewa AFC is an amateur Association football, football (soccer) club in Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. They will compete in Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 with newly appointed head coach Marty Rodwell History Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. Papatoetoe AFC is an amateur football club based in Papatoetoe, New Zealand. They currently compete in the NRF Championship, however, have enjoyed successful spells at the top of the New Zealand game, namely in the former National League, and having won two NRFL Premier League crowns. History Papatoetoe AFC was founded in 1959 through the efforts of Ken Hastings. The club entered the new Franklin & Districts competitions in 1960, competing from a site at the Papatoetoe Recreation Ground on Great South Road. Gisborne City AFC
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Five players were selected to participate in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Nelson United
Nelson United was a New Zealand soccer club, based in the South Island city of Nelson. Their home ground was Guppy Park. The team was founded in 1968 through the amalgamation of Nelson Thistle (founded 1924) and Nelson Rangers (founded 1950 as Settlers, name changed in 1959).
