The 1984 NCAA Division I men's lacrosse tournament was the 14th annual Division I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament, involving twelve NCAA Division I college men's lacrosse teams. Overview The championship game was hosted by University of Delaware and was played in front of 17,253 fans at Delaware Stadium. The game saw Johns Hopkins University defeat previously unbeaten Syracuse University by the score of 13–10. Delaware Stadium
Delaware Stadium is a 18,800-seat multi-purpose stadium in Newark, Delaware, and is home to the University of Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens football team. The stadium is part of the David M. Nelson Athletic Complex, which includes the Bob Carpenter Center, Fred P. Rullo Stadium, the Fred Rust Ice Arena and the Delaware Field House. History Delaware Stadium opened on November 15, 1952 with the Blue Hens defeating Lafayette 13–12. Delaware Stadium has expanded with the growth of the university, with seating expansions in 1964, 1970, 1972, and 1975. Virginia Cavaliers Men's Lacrosse
The Virginia Cavaliers men's lacrosse team represents the University of Virginia in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's lacrosse. The Cavaliers compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and plays home games at Klöckner Stadium, or occasionally Turf Field or Scott Stadium, in Charlottesville, Virginia. NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship
The NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship tournament determines the annual top men's field lacrosse team in the NCAA Division I. This tournament has determined the national champion since the inaugural 1971 NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Championship. From 1936 through 1970, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy annually to the collegiate champion based on regular season records. The 1984 NCAA Division III Lacrosse Championship was the fifth annual tournament to determine the national champions of NCAA Division III men's college lacrosse in the United States. 1984 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship
The 1984 NCAA Women's Lacrosse Championship was the third annual single-elimination tournament to determine the national championship of NCAA women's college lacrosse. The championship game was played at Nickerson Field in Boston, Massachusetts during May 1984. The Temple Owls won their first championship after defeating the Maryland Terrapins in the final, 6–4. The leading scorer for the tournament, for the second straight year, was Karen Emas, from Delaware, with 20 goals. Marie Schmucker, from Temple, was named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Qualification Until 1985, there was only one NCAA championship; a Division III title was added in 1985 and a Division II title in 2001. Delverne Dressel
Delverne "Del" Dressel is an American lacrosse player and a National Hall of Fame member, inducted in 2002. Career Dressel played midfielder for the Johns Hopkins University helping the team to NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship titles in 1984 and 1985. Dressel was an exceptional midfielder who excelled at both offense and defense, playing before the game changed to specialized offensive and defensive specialists. He was awarded the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Jr. Award as the nation's top midfielder in both 1984 and 1985. Dressel is one of only six college players to be named a first-team All-American four times, the others being Doug Turnbull (Johns Hopkins, 1922–25), Everett Smith (St. John's, 1933–37), Frank Urso (Maryland, 1973–76), Jason Coffman (Salisbury St., 1993–96), and Michael Powell (Syracuse, 2001–04). John Tucker (lacrosse)
John Tucker is a retired American professional lacrosse player, and former head coach of the Boston Cannons and Atlanta Blaze of the now defunct MLL. He was also the head coach of the Philadelphia Wings of the National Lacrosse League. He was elected into the National Lacrosse League Hall of Fame in 2010 and into the National Lacrosse Hall of Famee in 2016. Playing career Tucker began his lacrosse playing career in ninth grade, joining the junior league team at Archbishop Curley High School under Coach Joe D'Adamo. He was a freshman and sophomore on the team during the school's 1976 and 1977 championship seasons, and he graduated from Curley in 1979. As a collegiate player, Tucker was a member on a number of winning teams. He played on the undefeated Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays team that won the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1984. Rutgers Scarlet Knights Men's Lacrosse
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's lacrosse team represents Rutgers University main campus in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I college lacrosse. The program first started at the varsity level in 1887. The coach is currently Brian Brecht, who is in his eighth year at that position and who joined Rutgers after previously coaching at Siena College. The team plays its home games at SHI Stadium. Syracuse Orange Men's Lacrosse
The Syracuse Orange men's lacrosse team represents Syracuse University in NCAA Division I men's college lacrosse. The Orange have won 15 national championship titles, and currently compete as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference men's lacrosse conference. Syracuse plays its home games at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, New York. History Syracuse played its first intercollegiate lacrosse game in 1916, and captured United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse League (USILL) co-championships in 1920, 1922, 1924, and 1925 based on winning the Northern Division.
