1984 Midwestern City Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1984 Midwestern City Conference men's basketball tournament (now known as the Horizon League men's basketball tournament) was held March 8–10 at UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois. defeated in the championship game, 68–66, to win their first MCC/Horizon League men's basketball tournament. The Golden Eagles received an automatic bid to the 1984 NCAA tournament as the #11 seed in the Midwest region. Credit Union 1 Arena (previously known as UIC Pavilion) is a multi-purpose arena located at 525 S. Racine Avenue on the Near West Side in Chicago, Illinois, which opened in 1982. Description and history Credit Union 1 Arena is located on the campus of the University of Illinois at Chicago. It opened in 1982. The UIC Pavilion was renovated in 2001, and is rented for many functions and concerts. It is accessible from the CTA Blue Line Racine stop, located one block north of the Pavilion. It is also accessible from the #7 Harrison Bus and the #60 Blue Island/26th Bus. Dick Acres
Richard K. Acres (May 17, 1934 – June 14, 2012) was an American college basketball coach. He served as head men's coach of Oral Roberts University (ORU) for three seasons. Acres played college basketball at UC Santa Barbara Gauchos men's basketball, UC Santa Barbara and semi-professionally for Kirby Shoes. He received a degree in education from UC Santa Barbara and later a master's degree from California State University, Los Angeles. After his playing career, he went into teaching, initially at Mark Twain High School. Acres coached at Carson High School (Carson, California), Carson High School in California from 1970 to 1982, winning the state 4A title in his last season there. He then took an assistant coaching role at Oral Roberts Golden Eagles men's basketball, Oral Roberts for the 1982–83 season under Ken Hayes. Horizon League Men's Basketball Tournament
The Horizon League men's basketball conference tournament is held annually at the end of the men's college basketball regular season. The tournament has been played each year since 1980. The winner of the tournament is designated the Horizon League Tournament Champion and receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The finals of the tournament are typically among the first held before the field for the NCAA tournament is announced. History and tournament format Through 2002, the entire tournament was hosted at a single venue. From 2003 through 2015, all first-round matches were played at the home court of the higher-seeded team involved. 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1984 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 53 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1984, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Seattle. A total of 52 games were played. This was the last tournament in which some teams earned first-round byes as the field expanded to 64 teams beginning in the 1985 tournament when each team played in the first round. It was also the second year with a preliminary round; preliminary games would not be played again until 2001. Georgetown, coached by John Thompson, won the national title with an 84–75 victory in the final game over Houston, coached by Guy Lewis.
