Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. Gate Dancer
Gate Dancer (1981–1998) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known as a winner of an American Classic Race, the Preakness Stakes, and for his part in a three-horse finish in the inaugural running of the Breeders' Cup Classic. Bred in Florida by William R. Davis, Gate Dancer was a son of Sovereign Dancer, in turn a son of the great Northern Dancer. He was out of the mare Sun Gate, whose sire was Bull Lea, a five-time Leading sire in North America. Owned by Ken Opstein. Trained by Jack Van Berg, on the racetrack the high-strung colt became distressed from the sounds of the crowd until his trainer devised a hood for his head with earmuffs that minimized the noise. Patricia Joen "Patti" or "P.J." Cooksey (born February 25, 1958 in Youngstown, Ohio, United States) is a retired jockey from American Thoroughbred racing. She won her first race with ''Turf Advisor'' at Waterford Park (now Mountaineer Park) in 1979. A four-time Turfway Park leading rider, Cooksey has won 2,137 wins since beginning her career in 1979, and she was the all-time leading female jockey by number of victories before Julie Krone overtook her. In 1985 she became the first female jockey to ride in the Preakness Stakes, finishing 6th aboard Tajawa. Bud Delp
Grover Greer "Bud" Delp (September 7, 1932 – December 29, 2006) was an American Hall of Fame Thoroughbred racehorse trainer best remembered for his conditioning of Hall of Fame colt, Spectacular Bid, who according to Delp was "The greatest horse to ever look through a bridle". Bud Delp began his career as a Thoroughbred trainer in 1962 and in 1980 was voted the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer. Delp, along with John J. Tammaro, Jr., King T. Leatherbury and Richard E. Dutrow, Sr. were known as Maryland racing's "Big Four" who dominated racing in that state during the 1960s and 1970s and who helped modernize thoroughbred racing. Loblolly Stable was a Thoroughbred horse breeding and racing stable in Lake Hamilton, Arkansas owned by businessman John Ed Anthony and his former wife Mary Lynn. The stable's first top runner was Cox's Ridge who won important races in 1977 and 1978 and went on to become an excellent sire. Loblolly Stable had back-to-back wins in the Preakness Stakes in 1992 and 1993 with Pine Bluff and Prairie Bayou respectively and also won the 1980 Belmont Stakes with Temperence Hill.
