1984 Intercontinental Cup
The 1984 Intercontinental Cup was an association football match between Liverpool of England and Independiente of Argentina on 9 December 1984 at the National Stadium in Tokyo, Japan, the annual Intercontinental Cup contested between the winners of the Copa Libertadores and European Cup. Independiente were appearing in their sixth Intercontinental Cup, they had won the competition once in 1973 and lost the other four. Liverpool were making their second appearance in the competition, after their loss in 1981. The teams had qualified for the competition by winning their continent's primary cup competition. Independiente qualified by winning the primary South American cup competition, the Copa Libertadores. They won the 1984 Copa Libertadores by defeating Brazilian team Grêmio 3–1 on points in the finals. Liverpool qualified by winning the primary European cup competition, the European Cup. The 1974 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in March and April 1975 between Independiente, winners of the 1974 Copa Libertadores, and the runners up of the 1973–74 European Cup, Atlético Madrid, as the winners Bayern Munich declined to participate. The first leg was held on 12 March 1975 at the Estadio Libertadores de América, then known as the ''Estadio de Independiente'' or ''La Doble Visera'', home of Independiente. The 1965 Intercontinental Cup was an association football tie held over two legs in September 1965 between the winners of the 1964–65 European Cup Inter Milan and Independiente, winners of the 1965 Copa Libertadores, premier competitions in European and South American club football. This was a rematch of the previous year's edition. The first leg was held on 8 September 1965 at San Siro, home of Inter, who won the match 3–0, with goals from Joaquín Peiró and Sandro Mazzola.
