1984 Holiday Bowl
The 1984 Holiday Bowl was one of the games that determined the College football national championships in NCAA Division I FBS, national championship in college football for the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season, 1984 season. Played on December 21 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, it pitted the unranked 1984 Michigan Wolverines football team, Michigan Wolverines against the top-ranked 1984 BYU Cougars football team, BYU Cougars. Despite six turnovers and being down by seven in the fourth quarter, BYU rallied and won the game, the attendance of 61,248 on Friday night was a record for Jack Murphy Stadium at that time. Big Ten Conference
The Big Ten Conference (stylized B1G, formerly the Western Conference and the Big Nine Conference) is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. 1984 Michigan Wolverines Football Team
The 1984 Michigan Wolverines football team was an American football team that represented the University of Michigan in the 1984 Big Ten Conference football season. In their 16th season under head coach Bo Schembechler, the Wolverines compiled a 6–6 record (5–4 against conference opponents) and outscored opponents by a total of 214 to 200. It was the only team in Michigan's 21 seasons under coach Schembechler that did not finish its season with a winning record. Michigan began the season under quarterback Jim Harbaugh. The Wolverines went 3–1 in their first four games under Harbaugh, but Harbaugh's season ended with a broken arm in a loss to Michigan State. Michigan next turned to Russ Rein who started two games, including a 26–0 loss to Iowa, the worst loss for a Michigan team since Schembechler took over as head coach. Chris Zurbrugg
Christopher M. Zurbrugg (born August 10, 1964) is a former American football player. He played at the quarterback position for the University of Michigan from 1984 to 1986. He was Michigan's starting quarterback in the last half of the 1984 season and led the Wolverines in the 1984 Holiday Bowl against the national champion BYU Cougars. In his second start for Michigan, Zurbrugg set a Michigan record for most passing yards in a game and tied the record with four touchdown passes in a game. Zurbrugg later became a high school teacher and football coach in Alliance, Ohio. Early years Zurbrugg grew up in Alliance, Ohio and graduated from Alliance High School in 1983. The 1984 Boston College Eagles football team represented the Boston College as an independent during the 1984 NCAA Division I-A football season. Doug Flutie gained national attention in 1984 when he quarterbacked the Eagles to victory in a high-scoring, back-and-forth game against the Miami Hurricanes (led by QB Bernie Kosar). The game was nationally televised on CBS the day after Thanksgiving and thus had a huge audience. Miami staged a dramatic drive to take the lead, 45–41, in the closing minute of the game. Boston College then took possession at its own 22-yard line with 28 seconds to go. After two passes moved the ball another 30 yards, only 6 seconds remained. Douglas Richard Flutie (born October 23, 1962) is an American former football quarterback whose professional career spanned 21 seasons. He played 12 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), eight seasons in the Canadian Football League (CFL), and one season in the United States Football League (USFL). A high school standout from Natick, Massachusetts, Flutie played college football at Boston College, where he won the Heisman Trophy in 1984 amid a season that saw him throw the game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds against Miami. The 1985 Fiesta Bowl was the fourteenth edition of the college football bowl game, played at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, on Tuesday, January 1. Part of the 1984–85 bowl game season, it matched the fourteenth-ranked UCLA Bruins of the Pacific-10 Conference, and the #13 Miami Hurricanes, an independent.
