1984 ECAC Metro Men's Basketball Tournament
The 1984 ECAC Metro men's basketball tournament (now known as the Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament) was held March 8–10. All three rounds of the tournament were played at McCann Field House in Poughkeepsie, New York. Long Island defeated two-time defending tournament champion in the championship game, 87–81, to win the school's first ECAC Metro men's basketball tournament title. The Blackbirds earned the automatic bid to the 1984 NCAA Tournament. McCann Field House
McCann Arena is a 3,200-seat multi-purpose arena in Poughkeepsie, New York, United States. It was built in 1977 and is home to the Marist College Red Foxes men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball teams. The arena's namesake is James J. McCann. McCann was born in Poughkeepsie in 1880, and operated, along with his family, the McCann Feed and Grain Store on Main Street. McCann did well in the stock market and used the assets to establish the McCann Foundation in 1967, two years before his death, which began awarding money in 1969 for "progressive human welfare work." A maple floor was originally donated by former National Basketball Association (NBA) All-Star Rik Smits for use by his alma mater. Following an accidental soaking of the court by a fire sprinkler, Smits re-donated a new court. 1983–84 Long Island Blackbirds Men's Basketball Team
The 1983–84 Long Island Blackbirds men's basketball team represented Long Island University during the 1983–84 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Blackbirds, led by head coach Paul Lizzo, played their home games at the Schwartz Athletic Center and were members of the ECAC Metro Conference. They finished the season 20–11, 11–5 in ECAC-M play to capture the regular season championship. They also won the ECAC Metro tournament to earn an automatic bid in the 1984 NCAA tournament where they lost in the play-in round to Northeastern, 90–87. Carey Scurry
Carey Scurry (born December 4, 1962) is an American professional basketball player. A forward from Long Island University, Scurry played three seasons (1985–1988) in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Utah Jazz and New York Knicks. He averaged 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game over the course of his NBA career. Scurry also played in Greece, Spain, and Brazil. In January 2006, Scurry was named to the Northeast Conference 25th Anniversary Men's Basketball Team. Carey is the older brother of Moses Scurry, who played on the 1990 UNLV team that won the NCAA championship. Northeast Conference Men's Basketball Tournament
The Northeast Conference men's basketball tournament is the conference championship tournament in basketball for the Northeast Conference (NEC). It has been held every year since the NEC was established in the 1981–82 season. The tournament is an eight-team single-elimination tournament and seeding is based on regular season records. The bracket is reseeded after the quarterfinals, with the highest remaining seed playing the lowest remaining seed in the semifinals. The tournament winner receives the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship, NCAA basketball tournament. 1984 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament
The 1984 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament involved 53 schools playing in single-elimination play to determine the national champion of men's NCAA Division I college basketball. It began on March 13, 1984, and ended with the championship game on April 2 in Seattle. A total of 52 games were played. This was the last tournament in which some teams earned first-round byes as the field expanded to 64 teams beginning in the 1985 tournament when each team played in the first round. It was also the second year with a preliminary round; preliminary games would not be played again until 2001. Georgetown, coached by John Thompson, won the national title with an 84–75 victory in the final game over Houston, coached by Guy Lewis.
