The 1984 Australian Open was a tennis tournament played on grass courts at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne in Victoria in Australia. Held from 26 November through 9 December 1984, it was the 73rd edition of the Australian Open. American Chris Evert became the first tennis player in the open era to win 1,000 matches during this fortnight, ending the tournament with the women's title and a match winning record of 1,003 – 97. Sweden's Mats Willander won the men's single title, successfully defending his 1983 Australian Open championship picking up his third Grand Slam title. The Grand Slam in tennis is the achievement of winning all four major championships in one discipline in a calendar year, also referred to as the "Calendar-year Grand Slam" or "Calendar Slam". In doubles, a team may accomplish the Grand Slam playing together or a player may achieve it with different partners. Winning all four major championships consecutively but not within the same calendar year is referred to as a "non-calendar-year Grand Slam", while winning the four majors at any point during the course of a career is known as a "Career Grand Slam". Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club
Kooyong Stadium, at the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club, is an Australian tennis venue, located in the Melbourne suburb of Kooyong. The stadium, was built in 1927, and has undergone several renovations. It has a seating capacity of slightly more than 5,000. At its peak the stadium was capable of hosting up to 15,000 patrons. History Kooyong was the venue for the Australian Open, whenever that tournament was held in Melbourne, becoming the permanent venue from 1972 to 1987. It was the last Australian Open venue to play on grass courts. The tournament was moved to the hard courts of Melbourne Park in 1988. Now a hard-court surface, it remains the venue for the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament. Helena Dahlström
Helena Dahlström (born 13 May 1968) is a Swedish former professional tennis player. Biography A right-handed player from Linköping, Dahlström was the girls' singles runner-up at the 1984 Australian Open. Dahlström competed on the professional tour in the late 1980s and reached a top singles ranking of 166. She won the Australian Hard Court Championships in 1985 and featured in the main draw of the 1986 French Open as a qualifier. She appeared in two Federation Cup ties for Sweden in 1986, playing both singles and doubles in a World Group fixture against France, then in the consolations rounds against Belgium. The racket sport traditionally named lawn tennis, invented in Birmingham, England now commonly known simply as tennis, is the direct descendant of what is now denoted real tennis or royal tennis, which continues to be played today as a separate sport with more complex rules. Claudia Kohde-Kilsch
Claudia Kohde-Kilsch (''née'' Kohde; born 11 December 1963) is a former German tennis player and member of the Die Linke. During her tennis career, she won two women's doubles Grand Slam titles. She also won eight singles titles and a total of 25 doubles titles. Personal life Kohde-Kilsch was born Claudia Kohde in Saarbrücken, but added the hyphenated "-Kilsch" to her name which came from her adoptive father Jürgen Kilsch, an attorney. Helena Suková () (born 23 February 1965) is a Czech former professional tennis player. During her career, she won 14 major doubles titles, nine in women's doubles and five in mixed doubles. He played in two Grand Slam singles finals and won four Grand Slam doubles titles, reaching a career-high singles ranking of world No. 5 in July 1985.
