1984 Australian Football Championships
The 1984 Australian Football Championships was an Australian rules football series between representative teams of the three major football states. Games involving Victoria were played under State of Origin rules, whilst the match between Western Australia and South Australia involved players based in their respective states at the time. The competition was won by Western Australia. Australian Rules Football
Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. There are rules on how the ball can be handled; for example, players running with the ball must intermittently bounce or touch it on the ground. Throwing the ball is not allowed, and players must not get caught holding the ball. Laurie Keene
Lawrence Kimberley Brett "Laurie" Keene (born 2 January 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the VFL/AFL. Tall and athletic, Laurie Keene was recruited to West Coast from Subiaco, where he had been a member of premiership sides in 1986 and 1988. He could play as a key position forward or in the ruck and had topped Subiaco's goalkicking in 1985 with 70 goals as well as winning their 'Fairest and best' award in 1986. He kicked West Coast's first goal (and score) in VFL/AFL football. His career at West Coast was often interrupted by injury, most notably an Achilles tendon injury which ended his VFL/AFL career, but he had a solid debut season with 25 goals, which included a then club record haul of six against Carlton at Princes Park. Don Holmes
Donald Shane Holmes (born 5 January 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who was played in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) for and in the Victorian Football League (VFL) for . Playing career A local boy from Bassendean Holmes made his debut in 1978 at nineteen years of age. He represented Swan Districts in four WAFL Grand Final sides playing in the forward line either as a forward pocket or a half forward flank. Holmes kicked two goals in the 1982 and 1983 grand final and five goals in the 1984 grand final. He was also selected in the 1984 WA State team. In 1987 Holmes was recruited by the West Coast Eagles and was part of their inaugural team and played for them for three seasons playing 23 games and kicking 40 goals. David Hart (footballer)
David Hart (born 3 March 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with West Coast in the AFL. Although he was born in Victoria he was brought up in the West Australian town of Bruce Rock. He played seven games for West Perth, followed by 55 games with South Fremantle before being recruited by West Coast. A rover come defender, Hart played in West Coast's inaugural VFL side in 1987. His best season came in 1994 when he earned All Australian selection and won a premiership. In 1996 he was named in the backline in West Coast's Team of the Decade. Jon Fogarty (footballer)
Jonathon Alfred "Jon" Fogarty (born 31 January 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who was highly successful in the West Australian Football League (WAFL), playing for the Swan Districts Football Club. Initially, Swan Districts recruited Fogarty from the Collie team Mines Rovers. As a mid-fielder, Fogarty played for the Swans from 1979–1985. In the seven seasons he played for, he notched up 133 games and kicked 38 goals. Fogarty was an integral part of the mid-field playing as a ruck rover in the victorious Grand Final sides of 1982, 1983 and 1984. Rhett Clarke Baynes (16 May 1964 – 30 August 1990) was an Australian rules footballer who played with the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and the Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1980s. Robert Wiley
Robert John Wiley (born 24 March 1955) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Perth Football Club in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and for the Richmond Football Club and West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Murray Rance
Murray Douglas Rance (born 25 January 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray and West Coast in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1980s. He was a key position player and started his career at Swan Districts with whom he won three consecutive premierships starting in 1982. After representing Western Australia at the interstate championships, Rance was recruited to Footscray and spent two seasons at the club. Steve Malaxos
Stephen "Steve" Malaxos (born 19 June 1961) is a former Australian rules footballer and coach from Western Australia. While playing for Claremont in the WAFL, he won the 1984 Sandover Medal. Malaxos was an All-Australian with Claremont in 1986 and while he was with the West Coast Eagles in 1988. He was the inaugural fairest and best player at West Coast (1987), holds the Eagles' record for the most possessions in a game (48) and captained the club in 1990. Malaxos was the head coach at East Fremantle, after successfully coaching the colts team to a premiership in 2010. In 2005, he was inducted into the Western Australian Football Hall of Fame.
