Massachusetts General Court
The Massachusetts General Court (formally styled the General Court of Massachusetts) is the state legislature of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The name "General Court" is a hold-over from the earliest days of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, when the colonial assembly, in addition to making laws, sat as a judicial court of appeals. Before the adoption of the state constitution in 1780, it was called the ''Great and General Court'', but the official title was shortened by John Adams, author of the state constitution. It is a bicameral body. The upper house is the Massachusetts Senate which is composed of 40 members. The lower body, the Massachusetts House of Representatives, has 160 members. George Keverian (June 3, 1931 – March 6, 2009) was an American Democratic Party (United States), Democratic Party politician who served as the List of Speakers of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1985 until 1991. In his role in the legislature, he was an advocate for greater openness in leadership, free speech and government reform. Jack Backman
Jack H. Backman (April 26, 1922 – July 19, 2002) was an American politician who served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives and the Massachusetts Senate. Early life Backman was born on April 26, 1922 in Saugus, Massachusetts. His father was a shoe factory foreman and Backman grew up in various New England manufacturing towns, including Lynn, Massachusetts, Bangor, Maine, and Claremont, New Hampshire. In 1943 he graduated from Syracuse University. During World War II he was a sergeant in the Army Air Force. In 1948 he graduated from Harvard Law School. From 1961 to 1966 he was a member of the Brookline, Massachusetts Housing Authority. George A. Bachrach (born December 2, 1951) is the former president of the Environmental League of Massachusetts, having former careers as an American politician, attorney, and journalism professor at Boston University. Biography A 1973 graduate of Trinity College and a 1976 graduate of Boston University School of Law, Bachrach worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Middlesex County and as a campaign manager and administrative assistant for Congressman Ed Markey before his election to the State Senate in 1980. Michael Stanley Dukakis (; born November 3, 1933) is an American retired lawyer and politician who served as governor of Massachusetts from 1975 to 1979 and again from 1983 to 1991.
