Leopold III Of Belgium
Leopold III (3 November 1901 – 25 September 1983) was King of the Belgians from 23 February 1934 until his abdication on 16 July 1951. At the outbreak of World War II, Leopold tried to maintain Belgian neutrality, but after the German invasion in May 1940, he surrendered his country, earning him much hostility, both at home and abroad. Leopold's act was declared unconstitutional by Prime Minister Hubert Pierlot and his cabinet, who moved to London to form a government-in-exile, while Leopold and his family were placed under house arrest. In 1944, they were moved to Germany and then Austria, before being liberated by the Americans, but banned for some years from returning to Belgium, where his brother Prince Charles, Count of Flanders, had been declared regent. Leopold's eventual return to his homeland in 1950 nearly caused a civil war, and under pressure from the government, he abdicated in favour of his son Baudouin in July 1951. Paul Harsin
Paul Marie Isidore Harsin (1902–1983) was an economic and political historian who held doctorates in the humanities, social sciences, and law. He was a professor at the University of Liège for over 40 years and briefly served as president of the Royal Academy of Science, Letters and Fine Arts of Belgium. Life Harsin was born in Liège on 21 January 1902. In 1928 he succeeded his teacher, Karl Hanquet, as professor of history, teaching until 1970. In 1950, he was awarded the Francqui Prize in Human Sciences. He was elected a corresponding member of the Belgian Royal Academy on 7 May 1951, a full member on 5 December 1955, and served as president in 1967. He died in Liège on 11 July 1983. Count Albert-Émile de Beauffort (20 March 1899 – 15 March 1983) was a Belgian colonial administrator. Early years Albert Émile Joseph Benoît François d'Assise Anne Marie Ghislain de Beauffort was born in St-Gilles, Brussels on 20 March 1899. His parents were Georges de Beauffort, Comte de Beauffort (1871–1928) and Antoinette de Liedekerke de Pailhe (1869–1959). He obtained a degree in Commerce. After World War I (1914–1918) he was made a commissioner of war damages. Belgian Congo On 8 March 1925 Beauffort married Adrienne de Zualart (1894–1995) in Boma. In 1933 de Beauffort was appointed Commissioner of Léopoldville Province in the Belgian Congo when that province was created from part of the former Congo-Kasaï Province. Nina Van Koeckhoven
Nina van Koeckhoven (born 6 October 1983) is a Belgian freestyle swimmer and triathlete. She won two medals at the 2000 European Aquatics Championships and participated in the 2000 Summer Olympics in four events, but did not reach the finals. Van Koeckhoven was born in Ghent but later moved to Zelzate. In 1991, she started swimming in a club. Her first international success was a bronze medal in the 200 m freestyle at the 1997 European Youth Olympic Festival in Lisbon. Next year she won two more bronze medals, in the 100 m and 200 m freestyle at the European Junior Swimming Championships. From 1999 she competed in regular competitions and reached the finals at the 1999 European Aquatics Championships, again in the 200 m freestyle. Jo Deman, from Leuven, Belgium is one of the 12 elected members of the World Scout Committee, the main executive body of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. He was elected to the Committee at the 41st World Scout Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2017.
