Discus Throw
The discus throw (), also known as disc throw, is a track and field event in which an athlete throws a heavy disk (mathematics), disc—called a discus—in an attempt to mark a farther distance than their competitors. It is an classical antiquity, ancient sport, as demonstrated by the fifth-century-BC Myron statue ''Discobolus''. Although not part of the current pentathlon, it was one of the events of the Ancient Olympic pentathlon, ancient Greek pentathlon, which can be dated back to at least 708 BC, and it is part of the modern decathlon. History The sport of throwing the discus traces back to it being an event in the Ancient Olympic Games, original Olympic Games of Ancient Greece. The discus as a sport was resurrected in Magdeburg, Germany, by gymnastics teacher Christian Georg Kohlrausch and his students in the 1870s. Meg Ritchie
Margaret "Meg" Elizabeth Stone (née Ritchie, born 6 July 1952) is a retired Scottish discus thrower and Shot putter. She reached the Olympic finals at discus in Moscow 1980 (9th) and Los Angeles 1984 (5th). She also won the 1982 Commonwealth Games title. Her discus best of 67.48 metres has stood as the British record since 1981, while her shot put best of 18.99 metres has stood as the Scottish record since 1983. Career Born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Ritchie won the Scottish championships in discus seven times and in shot put she won three Scottish titles. She also won the UK Championships four times in the discus, and three AAA discus titles. Her personal best throw was , achieved in April 1981 in Walnut. Mereoni Vibose
Mereoni Vibose (26 April 1951 – 27 January 2018) was a Fijian female track and field athlete who competed in the discus throw and javelin throw. She won nine South Pacific Games medals from 1969 to 1991 and set the Fijian record for javelin and discus at the National Athletics Championships. Vibose was inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame in 1998. She represented her country internationally at the World Championships in Athletics and at the Commonwealth Games. Biography Vibose was born on 26 April 1951. She grew up in Nadroga, Fiji and was an athlete during her time at Adi Cakobau School. In national championships, Vibose won 2 gold medals in javelin and discus each at the 1983 and 1987 National Athletics Championships in Fiji. Mariette Van Heerden
Margaritha Constantia "Mariette" Van Heerden (born 22 November 1952) is a Zimbabwean former discus thrower and shot puter. Van Heerden was born in Southern Rhodesia but grew up in South Africa and was the holder of South African records in shot put and discus throw as well as a multiple South African champion in both these events (1980 and 1981). Venissa Head
Venissa Anne Head (born 1 September 1956 in Merthyr Tydfil) is a former international track and field athlete from Wales. Biography She went to secondary school at Cyfarthfa Castle Grammar School in Wales, and it was whilst there that she won her first of 15 Welsh shot put titles, at the age of 17. She won 25 Welsh titles in total, with her 10 successive discus titles coming between 1979 and 1988. She was a member of the Cardiff Athletic Club, where she still holds the club discus record, as well as both the indoor and outdoor shot put records. She was also a member of Bristol and West Athletic Club, and still holds the club discus and shot put records. She took part in the inaugural IAAF World Championships in 1983, competing in both the shot put and the discus throw. In the shot put, she finished 5th in Group A in qualifying with a put of 18.41 metres. She putted a shorter 18.05 in the final to finish 10th overall. Carol Therese Cady (born June 6, 1962, in Los Alamos, New Mexico) is a retired female shot putter and discus thrower from the United States. Ria Stalman
Maria "Ria" Geertruida Stalman (born 11 December 1951) is a retired discus thrower and shot putter from the Netherlands. Biography She won the gold medal in the discus throw at the 1984 Summer Olympics, which earned her the Dutch Sportswoman of the year award the same year. Between 1973 and 1983 she won medals, including 15 gold, in the discus throw and shot put at every national championships. Stalman went to Arizona State University, where she was on the track and field team. She retired shortly after the 1984 Olympics to work as a journalist and athletics commentator with ''Eurosport''. In early 2016, Stalman admitted in a TV interview that she had been using doping when she won her 1984 gold medal. The results and records remain, because the offense is too old to prosecute. Tsvetanka Pavlova Khristova ( bg, Цветанка Павлова Христова) (sometimes spelled Tsvetanka Hristova, 14 March 1962 – 14 November 2008) was a Bulgarian discus thrower. She won gold at the 1991 World Championships and the 1982 European Championships. She also won two Olympic medals, with bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and silver at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Her best throw of 73.22 metres in 1987, ranks her eighth on the world all-time list. Life Born in Kazanlak, Stara Zagora she became European champion in 1982 at only 20 years of age. Nine years later she won the World Championships, and the following year won an Olympic silver medal. Khristova tested positive for steroids in 1993 and was banned from competition. Gisela Beyer (later Reißmüller, born 16 July 1960 in Stalinstadt, Bezirk Frankfurt) is a retired East German discus thrower. She finished fourth at the 1980 Summer Olympics, fourth at the 1982 European Championships and fifth at the 1983 World Championships. She represented the sports team ASK Vorwärts Potsdam and became East German champion in 1983 and 1984. Her personal best throw was 73.10 metres, achieved in July 1984 in Berlin.
