1983 French Open – Women's Singles
Chris Evert defeated Mima Jaušovec in the final, 6–1, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1983 French Open. It was her fifth French Open singles title and her 15th major singles title overall. Martina Navratilova was the defending champion, but was defeated in the fourth round by Kathy Horvath. It was her only loss for the entire year and ended a 39 match winning streak. This edition of the French Open was the first to have a 128-player main draw. This tournament marked the first major appearance of future world No. 1 and 22-time major champion Steffi Graf. At 13 years, 11 months and 9 days of age, Graf became the youngest player to compete in the main draw of a major. Christine Marie Evert (born December 21, 1954), known as Chris Evert Lloyd from 1979 to 1987, is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. Evert won 18 major singles titles, including a record seven French Open titles and a joint-record six US Open titles (tied with Serena Williams). She was ranked world No. 1 for 260 weeks, and was the year-end world No. 1 singles player seven times (1974–78, 1980, 1981). Alongside Martina Navratilova, her greatest rival, Evert dominated women's tennis in the 1970s and 1980s. Evert reached 34 major singles finals, the most in history. Kathy Rinaldi-Stunkel (born March 24, 1967) is a former professional American tennis player, who retired in September 1997. In her career, she won three singles and two doubles titles on the WTA Tour, and reached the semifinals of the 1985 Wimbledon Championships. Elisabeth Ekblom
Elisabeth Ekblom (born 10 February 1958) is a former professional tennis player from Sweden. Biography Ekblom was a semifinalist at the 1976 Australian Open as a 17-year-old. She started her run with a straight sets win over second seed Kerry Reid, then defeated unseeded players Kathleen Harter and Christine Matison. In the semifinal, she was beaten by Czechoslovakia's Renáta Tomanová. In 1978, she made her Fed Cup debut for Sweden in a first round tie against France. Pam Teeguarden
Pam Teeguarden (born April 17, 1951) is a former American professional tennis player in the 1970s and 1980s, ranked in the top 20 from 1970–1975. She won two Grand Slam Doubles Titles and was a quarter finalist in singles at the U.S. Open and The French Open. Her father Jerry, a well known coach, helped Margaret Court win the coveted Grand Slam (all four Grand Slam titles in one year) in 1970 and Virginia Wade to her 1977 Wimbledon triumph. Teeguarden was voted the "Most Watchable Player" based on play and appearance by a group of Madison Avenue advertising executives or "Mad Men" while playing at the US Open. Wendy White-Prausa (born 29 September 1960) is a former professional tennis player. Early life and education White was born in 1960 in the state of Georgia. When she was 8, she learned to play tennis at a summer camp. White became a dominant junior player in her state and on the sectional and national levels. From 1977 to 1978, she won or was a finalist in over 30 national junior and amateur championships. In 1978, she was offered a full scholarship to Rollins College. Pascale Paradis-Mangon (born 24 April 1966) is a former professional tennis player from France. Paradis was the World Junior Champion in women's singles in 1983. Sherry Acker (born June 16, 1959) is a former tennis player from the U.S. who was active in the late 1970s and first half of the 1980s. Acker was taught tennis by her father who was the coach at Kalamazoo College. In 1971, she won the girls' national singles and doubles title for 12-year-olds. She attended Kalamazoo Central High School and played on the varsity boys' tennis team. She attended the University of Florida and turned pro in 1978.
