1983 Edgbaston Cup
The 1983 Edgbaston Cup was a women's tennis tournament played on outdoor grass courts that was part of the 1983 Virginia Slims World Championship Series. It was the 2nd edition of the tournament. Grass Court
A grass court is one of the four different types of tennis court on which the sport of tennis, originally known as "lawn tennis", is played. Grass courts are made of grasses in different compositions depending on the tournament. Although grass courts are more traditional than other types of tennis courts, maintenance costs of grass courts are higher than those of hard courts and clay courts. Grass courts (in the absence of suitable covers) must be left for the day if rain appears, as the grass becomes very slippery when wet and will not dry for many hours. This is a disadvantage on outdoor courts compared to using hard and clay surfaces, where play can resume in 30 to 120 minutes after the end of rain. Ann Kiyomura
Ann Kiyomura-Hayashi (born August 22, 1955) is a retired American professional tennis player. She is from San Mateo, California. Kiyomura played on the WTA Tour from 1973 to 1984. She played in 11 US Opens, reaching the fourth round in 1978. In 1973, she won the Wimbledon junior singles title, beating Martina Navratilova. In 1975, she won the Wimbledon women's doubles title, playing with Kazuko Sawamatsu. She reached the final of the Australian Open women's doubles in 1980. Kiyomura played in 1981 for the short-lived Oakland Breakers of World Team Tennis (WTT). Lucky Loser
A lucky loser is a sports competitor (player or team) who loses a match in a knockout tournament or loses in qualifying, but who then enters the main draw, usually when another competitor withdraws during the tournament because of illness, injury, or other reasons. Elizabeth Sayers
Elizabeth Smylie (née Sayers, born 11 April 1963), sometimes known as Liz Smylie, is a retired Australian tennis player. During her career, she won four Grand Slam titles, one of them in women's doubles and three in mixed doubles. She also won three singles titles and 36 doubles titles on the tour. Career Smylie turned professional in 1982. She won the women's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1985 with Kathy Jordan. In mixed doubles, she teamed with John Fitzgerald to win the 1983 US Open and 1991 Wimbledon titles and with Todd Woodbridge to win the 1990 US Open. Chris O'Neil (tennis)
Christine O'Neil (born 19 March 1956) is an Australian former professional tennis player. O'Neil is best known for her singles victory at the 1978 Australian Open, and was the last Australian to win the title until Ashleigh Barty in 2022. She also became the first unseeded woman to win the title in the Open era. O'Neil is also one of the few players who have won both the Australian Open junior (1973) and senior (1978) titles. Anne Minter (born 3 April 1963) is a former tennis player from Australia. She competed for her native country at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. Minter won four singles titles on the WTA Tour: 1987 Taipei, Singapore; 1988 Puerto Rico; 1989 Taipei. She was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open in 1988, beating fourth seed Pam Shriver in the fourth round. Barbara Jordan (tennis)
Barbara Jordan (born April 2, 1957) is an American former professional tennis player who won the 1979 Australian Open singles title. Jordan also won the mixed doubles title at the 1983 French Open with Eliot Teltscher. Jordan was a three-time All-American at Stanford University, where she obtained her degree in economics in three years. She won the 1978 AIAW College National doubles with sister Kathy Jordan in 1978. Jordan made her first appearance on the (WTA) computer in August 1977 at No. 95. Cathy Drury (born 25 March 1960) is a British former professional tennis player. A right-handed player, Drury made her grand slam singles main draw debut at the 1977 Australian Open, where she was beaten in the opening round by second seeded countrywoman Sue Barker. Betty Stöve
Betty Flippina Stöve (born 24 June 1945) is a Dutch former professional tennis player. She is best remembered for reaching the ladies' singles final, the ladies' doubles final and the mixed doubles final during the same year at Wimbledon in 1977. She also won ten Grand Slam titles in women's doubles and mixed doubles. Career Stöve began playing tennis internationally in the mid-1960s. She made her Grand Slam debut at the 1964 Wimbledon. A virus, complicated by a malfunctioning thyroid gland, forced Stöve out of tennis for an 18-month period in the late 1960s.
