NCAA Division III
NCAA Division III (D-III) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. D-III consists of athletic programs at colleges and universities that choose not to offer athletic scholarships to their student-athletes. The NCAA's first split was into two divisions, the University and College Divisions, in 1956, the College Division was formed for smaller schools that did not have the resources of the major athletic programs across the country. The College Division split again in 1973 when the NCAA went to its current naming convention: Division I, Division II, and Division III. Division III schools are not allowed to offer athletic scholarships, while D-II schools can. Division III is the NCAA's largest division with around 450 member institutions, which are 80% private and 20% public. The 1982–83 NCAA Division II men's ice hockey season began in November 1981 and concluded on March 20 of the following year. This was the 19th season of second-tier college ice hockey. After the 1981–82 season the majority of teams that registered as NAIA programs switched to NCAA. This meant that the representation at the Division II championship, specifically from western schools, was more equitable than in years past.
