1982–83 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1982–83 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 57th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League. Offseason During the off-season, the Black Hawks hired Orval Tessier to become the head coach of the club. Tessier spent parts of three seasons playing in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens and Boston Bruins from 1954 to 1961. As a head coach, Tessier led the Cornwall Royals to the 1972 Memorial Cup championship, and also led the Kitchener Rangers to the 1981 Memorial Cup final. Tessier then led the New Brunswick Hawks to the 1981-82 Calder Cup. This would be Tessier's first NHL head coaching job. At the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, the Black Hawks selected Ken Yaremchuk with their first round draft pick, seventh overall. Yaremchuk played with the Portland Winter Hawks of the WHL in 1981-82, scoring 58 goals and 157 points in 72 games. Norris Division
The NHL's Norris Division was formed in 1974 as part of the Prince of Wales Conference. When the NHL realigned into geographic divisions in 1981, the division moved to the Clarence Campbell Conference, where it comprised the league's Great Lakes and Midwest teams, with the Detroit Red Wings being the only member to remain from the previous season. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. The division was named in honour of James E. Norris, longtime owner of the Red Wings. It is the forerunner of the NHL's Central Division. Ken Yaremchuk
Ken Yaremchuk (born January 1, 1964 in Edmonton, Alberta) is a retired professional ice hockey player who played 235 games in the National Hockey League. Tony Tanti
Anthony Tanti (born September 7, 1963) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was a left winger and played the majority of his career in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Vancouver Canucks. Originally selected 12th overall by the Chicago Black Hawks in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft, he was traded to the Canucks in January 1983. Tanti achieved the 40-goal mark on three occasions during his seven-year tenure with Vancouver. After being traded away in January 1990, he spent one-and-a-half year stints with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres, respectively. After 12 years in the NHL, Tanti went overseas to play for BSC Preussen of the German Bundesliga. He retired following the 1997–98 season. Curt Fraser
Curtis Martin Fraser (born January 12, 1958) is an American former professional ice hockey player Fraser was born in Cincinnati while his father played for the International Hockey League's Cincinnati Mohawks, and holds dual citizenship to Canada and the United States. He was raised in Winnipeg and Vancouver. Fraser was diagnosed with diabetes in 1983 and is active in fundraising and awareness efforts for the disease. The Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg.
