1982 South American Jaguars Rugby Union Tour Of South Africa
The 1982 South American Jaguars rugby union tour of South Africa was a series of seven matches played by the South American Jaguars rugby union team in South Africa in March and April 1982. The South American team won six of their tour matches, suffering only a single defeat to the South Africa national rugby union team. South American Jaguars
The South American XV (sometimes known as CONSUR XV and formerly as South American Jaguars) is a rugby union team made up from the national rugby sides in the Sudamérica Rugby (formerly CONSUR) rugby federation. The squad was first formed in 1980 to compete against South African teams, despite the ban imposed on that country in repudiation of apartheid. Over the eight test matches played, seven of them were won by the ''Springboks'' and only one was won by the ''Jaguars''. This single victory came at Bloemfontein in 1982. In 2011, a new South America XV was formed to face the Argentine side before they trip to New Zealand to play the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Ray Mordt
Raymond Herman "Ray" Mordt (born 15 February 1957 in Cape Town, South Africa) is a Zimbabwean/South African rugby footballer who represented his country in rugby union before moving to English professional rugby league club, Wigan, with whom he won the Championship during the 1986–87 season. He is the uncle of England Sevens player Nils Mordt. Playing career Rugby union Mordt grew up and started playing rugby in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe). He went to Churchill High School in Salisbury. Rob Louw
Robert James Louw (born 26 March 1955) is a South African rugby footballer who represented South Africa 19 times in international test rugby union. He also played in the Western Province teams that won the Currie Cup five consecutive times. South African rugby chief Danie Craven rated Louw as "one of the best Springboks ever to represent South Africa", "fast enough to play among the backs", and a "superb ambassador for South Africa" due to "his friendly manner and attractive personality". Burger Geldenhuys
Schalk Burger Geldenhuys (born 18 May 1956) is a South African former rugby union player. Career Throughout his career he played for only one province, Northern Transvaal. Geldenhuys played 184 matches for Northern Transvaal and also captained his province 54 times. In total, he played in seven tests for the Springboks and scored one try. His first test was as flanker on 29 August 1981 against the All Blacks at Athletic Park, Wellington. Wynand Claassen
Wynand Claassen (born 16 January 1951, in Schweizer-Reneke) is a former South African rugby player and Springbok captain. Playing career He was selected as eighth-man for Northern Transvaal whilst studying architecture at the University of Pretoria in the late 1970s. He formed a loose-trio with Thys Lourens and Burger Geldenhuys and soon had two Currie Cup final victories, in 1975 and 1977. In 1980 he moved to Natal and was selected for the Springboks in 1981, captaining the team on his debut against Ireland. Despite Natal's relegation to the Currie Cup B section at the end of 1981 he continued as Springbok captain until 1984. He played seven test matches for the Springboks, all as captain and also played in six tour matches, scoring two tries. Divan Serfontein
David Jacobus 'Divan' Serfontein (born 3 Augustus 1954 in Krugersdorp, South Africa) is a former Springbok rugby union player. Playing career Provincial career Serfontein started his rugby career in 1974 at where he was selected for the club's under-20 age group team. He was soon afterwards selected for the Western Province under-20 team and in his first match he played alongside the future South African cricketer, Peter Kirsten. In 1976 Serfontein made his provincial first team debut for Western Province against the touring All Blacks side of Andy Leslie. Western Province won this match 12–11. Hugo Porta
Hugo Porta (born 11 September 1951) is a former Argentine Rugby Union footballer, an inductee of both the International Rugby Hall of Fame and IRB Hall of Fame, and one of the best fly-halves the sport has seen. During the 1970s and 1980s, he played 58 times for ''Los Pumas'', captaining them on 34 occasions, including leading them during the first World Cup in 1987. Porta made his international debut in 1971. His best performances came in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with 1977 draw with France, the Pumas' 1979 24–13 win against Australia, and a 21–21 tie with the All Blacks on 2 November 1985. Hendrik Egnatius 'Naas' Botha (born 27 February 1958) is a South African former rugby union player, who played for Northern Transvaal and South Africa (the Springboks). He was voted ''Rugby Player of the Year'' in 1979, 1981, 1985 and 1987. Botha mostly played in the fly-half position and is now a rugby commentator for the South African M-Net and Supersport TV channels. Willem du Plessis (born 4 September 1955) is a former South African rugby union player. Early life Du Plessis was born in Somerset East in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. His father, also named Willie, played provincial rugby for Eastern Province and his maternal grandfather, Michael Josias du Plessis played for Western Province in 1923 and 1924. Du Plessis was educated at Gill College in Somerset East and in 1973, represented North Eastern Cape at the annual Craven Week tournament. He also represented Eastern Province at the South African junior athletics championships.
