1982 CARIFTA Games
The 11th CARIFTA Games was held in Kingston, Jamaica on April 10–12, 1982. Participation (unofficial) Detailed result lists can be found on the "World Junior Athletics History" website. An unofficial count yields the number of about 154 athletes (112 junior (under-20) and 42 youth (under-17)) from about 15 countries: Antigua and Barbuda (4), Bahamas (39), Bermuda (10), British Virgin Islands (2), Cayman Islands (5), Grenada (3), Guadeloupe (9), Guyana (2), Jamaica (45), Martinique (5), Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (2), Trinidad and Tobago (11), Turks and Caicos Islands (2). Austin Sealy Award The CARIFTA Games#Austin Sealy Award Winners, Austin Sealy Trophy for the most outstanding athlete of the games was awardeded to Laverne Eve from the Bahamas. Kingston, Jamaica
Kingston is the capital and largest city of Jamaica, located on the southeastern coast of the island. It faces a natural harbour protected by the Palisadoes, a long sand spit which connects the town of Port Royal and the Norman Manley International Airport to the rest of the island. In the Americas, Kingston is the largest predominantly English-speaking city in the Caribbean. The local government bodies of the parishes of Kingston and Saint Andrew were amalgamated by the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation Act of 1923, to form the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC). Gerald Martin (athlete)
Gerald Martin (born 22 February, 1944) is an English literary critic whose work focuses on Latin American fiction. He is particularly known for his work on the Guatemalan author Miguel Ángel Asturias and Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez, both Nobel Prize for Literature winners. His 2008 book, ''Gabriel García Márquez. A Life'', was the first full biography of García Márquez to be published in English. Biography Gerald Martin studied Spanish, French, and Portuguese at Bristol in 1965 and received his PhD in Latin American Literature from the University of Edinburgh in 1970. After spending a year in Cochabamba, Bolivia, with VSO (1965-1966), he later carried out postgraduate work in UNAM, Mexico (1968-1969) and, as a Harkness Fellowship recipient, was a visiting scholar at Stanford University (1971-1972). 110 Metres Hurdles
The 110 metres hurdles, or 110-metre hurdles, is a hurdling track and field event for men. It is included in the athletics programme at the Summer Olympic Games. The female counterpart is the 100 metres hurdles. As part of a racing event, ten hurdles of in height are evenly spaced along a straight course of 110 metres. They are positioned so that they will fall over if bumped into by the runner. Fallen hurdles do not carry a fixed time penalty for the runners, but they have a significant pull-over weight which slows down the run. Like the 100 metres sprint, the 110 metres hurdles begins in the starting blocks. For the 110 m hurdles, the first hurdle is placed after a run-up of 13.72 metres (45 ft) from the starting line. The next nine hurdles are set at a distance of 9.14 metres (30 ft) from each other, and the home stretch from the last hurdle to the finish line is 14.02 metres (46 ft) long. Anthony Charles (athlete)
Anthony Daniel Charles (born 11 March 1981) is an English footballer who most recently played as a defender for Rugby Town. Born in Isleworth, he has played in the Football League for Barnet, Aldershot Town, Northampton Town and Plymouth Argyle. He has won four promotions with three clubs. Career A defender, Charles began his career with Brook House before being signed by Crewe Alexandra. However, he never made a first team appearance for the club. He returned to the south of England in 2001, and played for several non-league clubs, winning the Isthmian League Premier Division with Aldershot Town in the 2002–03 season. Charles then joined Farnborough Town, before joining Barnet during their Conference promotion season of 2004–05. Charles was loaned to Aldershot Town for the end of the 2006–07 season, his second spell with the club and made the deal permanent after being released by Barnet.
