1982 Aloha Bowl
The 1982 Aloha Bowl was an American college football bowl game played on December 25, 1982 at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The inaugural Aloha Bowl game pitted the Washington Huskies and the Maryland Terrapins. This was the first bowl game played in Hawaii since the Pineapple Bowl in 1952. Background After a Rose Bowl championship the year prior, the Huskies began the season ranked #2 in the nation. They responded by winning their first seven games of the season while rising to #1 in the polls after the first week, though they slipped to #2 before a matchup with Stanford. A 43-31 loss to the Cardinal (who finished 5-6 that year) dropped them to #10, but they responded with wins over #9 UCLA and #3 Arizona State to get back to #5 heading into the final game of the year against Washington State in the Apple Cup, with a chance to win the conference title. The Aloha Bowl was a National Collegiate Athletic Association Football Bowl Subdivision (then known as Division I-A) college football bowl game played in Honolulu, Hawaii at Aloha Stadium. History The Aloha Bowl was established in 1982 by Mackay Yanagisawa, a sportsman from Oahu. John Kevin Tice (born June 22, 1960 in Bayshore, New York) is an American football coach and former tight end who played ten seasons in the National Football League for the New Orleans Saints. Norman Julius "Boomer" Esiason (; born April 17, 1961) is an American former professional football player who was a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons, primarily with the Cincinnati Bengals.
