1981 New Zealand National Soccer League
The 1981 New Zealand National Soccer League was the 12th season of a nationwide round-robin club competition in New Zealand football. Wellington Diamond United won the league for a second time, having previously been champions in 1976. The league was the closest until this point, with only four points separating the top five teams. Promotion and relegation Promotion was automatic, with the three lowest placed sides in the 1980 league ( Stop Out, Blockhouse Bay, and Nelson United) replaced by the winners of the northern, central, and southern leagues ( Takapuna City, Miramar Rangers, and Woolston WMC respectively). Team performance The league was decided by goals for only the fourth time, and for the first time neither of the top two teams came from Auckland. Christchurch United
Christchurch United is an amateur association football club in Christchurch, New Zealand. They compete in various Mainland Football competitions at Junior and Senior level. The club has won six National League titles and six Chatham Cup trophies. Christchurch United are the current Southern League champions. Miramar Rangers AFC
Miramar Rangers AFC is an amateur New Zealand association football club in the Wellington suburb of Miramar. The club is one of the most successful in New Zealand having won the Chatham Cup four times and the National League title twice. Over the last decade the club has played in the Central League and has won the division seven times, most recently in 2020. In 2004 it became one of the founding principal clubs of the Team Wellington franchise in the ASB Premiership. Club history Miramar won the Chatham Cup, New Zealand's premier knockout tournaments for men, in 1966, 1992, 2004 and 2010, and were Central League winners in 1997, 2006, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2020. Manurewa AFC is an amateur Association football, football (soccer) club in Manurewa, Auckland, New Zealand. They will compete in Lotto Sport Italia NRFL Division 1 with newly appointed head coach Marty Rodwell History Manurewa AFC was formed by the merger of Tramways (1929 Chatham Cup winner) and another club named Manurewa. The merged entity initially used the portmanteau name of Tramurewa, during which time the club won the 1931 Chatham Cup. Tramuwera reverted to the name of Manurewa in 1959, the name currently used by the club. Gisborne City AFC
Gisborne City AFC was an association football club in Gisborne, New Zealand. Founded in 1939 as Eastern Union, the club changed its name to Gisborne City after winning the Central Districts League at the first attempt in 1967. As Eastern Union, the club had competed in the Chatham Cup since the early 1950s, and reached the semi-final (and North Island Final) in 1957, losing to eventual champions Seatoun 3–1. Gisborne set the New Zealand record for the most players from one club to be chosen for the New Zealand national football team to compete at a FIFA World Cup. Five players were selected to participate in the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. University-Mount Wellington is an association football club in Auckland, New Zealand. It was formed from the amalgamation of University AFC and Mount Wellington AFC. The team play at Bill McKinlay Park, Panmure, Auckland. Club history During much of the 1970s and 1980s, Mt Wellington AFC was a strong club side, rivalled only by Christchurch United. Wellington United AFC is an association football club based in Wellington, New Zealand, that competes in the Central League. History Wellington Diamond United Wellington Diamond United was the result of the merger of Diamond and Zealandia/Wellington United in 1968. Diamond was founded as a junior football club in 1893 by members of the Star Rugby Club, who wished to play football. It became a senior team in 1895. Peter Mendham
Peter Stanley Mendham (born 9 April 1960) is an English former professional footballer who played as a midfielder for Norwich City. He was played in the side that won the Milk Cup in 1985. In February 2007, he was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for wounding with intent his girlfriend. His sentence was later reduced to five years. In 2011, he returned to football as assistant manager at Newmarket Town F.C. Career Mendham came through the youth ranks at Carrow Road, and played 267 first-team games (211 in the league), and scored 29 goals for the Canaries. He was forced to retire because of injury in 1987. He was a member of the Norwich teams that won the Football League Cup in 1985, and the Second Division championship in 1986. Following his premature retirement, the club awarded Mendham a testimonial match against Real Sociedad, and he continued to work for the club for several years as 'Football in the Community Officer'.
