1981 New England Patriots Season
The 1981 New England Patriots season was the franchise's 12th season in the National Football League and 22nd overall. Looking to improve on two consecutive winning seasons under head coach Ron Erhardt, including a 10–6 mark in 1980, the Patriots instead regressed significantly and ended the season with a record of two wins and fourteen losses, and finished tied for last in the AFC East Division with the Baltimore Colts, with whom they also tied for the worst record in the league. A porous defensive line and linebacking corps was the chief weakness: in one game against the Steelers the Patriot secondary made 27 of the team’s 33 tackles. The 2–14 record resulted in Erhardt losing his job at the end of the season. The Patriots lost their first four games, and then ten of their last eleven, including the last nine games of the season. Tony Collins (American Football)
Anthony Collins (born May 27, 1959) is a former American football running back. He played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) and the Arena Football League. He played in Super Bowl XX as a member of the New England Patriots. He played college football at East Carolina University. Early years A speedy and powerful runner, Collins first garnered notoriety in high school as a starter on the 1976 New York State Class B Champion Penn Yan Academy Mustangs. He grew up with 15 siblings as one of 16 children. NFL Collins attended East Carolina University and was selected in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. 1980 Stanford Cardinals Football Team
The 1980 Stanford Cardinals football team represented Stanford University in the Pacific-10 Conference during the 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season. Following the surprise resignation of Rod Dowhower after one season in January, Stanford's new head coach was alumnus Paul Wiggin, and he led the Cardinals to a 6–5 record (3–4 in Pac-10, tied for sixth). Home games were played on campus at Stanford Stadium in Stanford, California. Hired in February, Wiggin was a former star defensive end at Stanford ( All-Pacific Coast in 1955, 1956), played eleven years in the NFL, was a head coach for three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs (1975– 77), and most recently was the defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints. Tackle is a playing position in gridiron football. Historically, in the one-platoon system prevalent in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a tackle played on both offense and defense. In the modern system of specialized units, offensive tackle and defensive tackle are separate positions, and the stand-alone term "tackle" refers to the offensive tackle position only. The offensive tackle (OT, T) is a position on the offensive line, left and right. Brian Holloway
Brian Douglass Holloway (born July 25, 1959) is a former professional American football offensive tackle for the New England Patriots and Los Angeles Raiders from 1981 to 1988. He is the father of David Holloway, who also played professional football. Early life Holloway was a standout athlete at Winston Churchill High School in Potomac, Maryland, playing on the 1976 state championship football team and breaking the school record in the shot put. He was recruited by Bill Walsh to Stanford University, where he earned All-American honors. The 1978 San Francisco 49ers season was the franchise's 29th season in the National Football League and their 33rd overall. The team began the season hoping to improve upon their previous output of 5–9. Instead, the team started the season 0–4 for the second straight year. The team also suffered a nine-game losing streak. During the off-season, the 49ers acquired running back O. J. Simpson, who originally hailed from San Francisco, from the Buffalo Bills. Although Simpson had been one of the best backs in the league over the previous decade, he was in poor physical condition and had recently undergone knee surgery. As a result, his playing ability was limited. The 49ers finished with the worst record in the league and scored only 219 points the fewest in the league in 1978.
