1981 Australasian Individual Speedway Championship
The 1981 Australasian Individual Speedway Championship was the sixth annual Australasian Final for Motorcycle speedway riders from Australia and New Zealand as part of the qualification for the 1981 Speedway World Championship. This was the final time the Australasian Championship was staged. It was held at the Liverpool City Raceway in Sydney. The Final was easily won by six time World Champion Ivan Mauger who scored a 15-point maximum to win his second Australasian Championship. Surprisingly, Australia's leading riders Phil Crump and reigning Australian Champion Billy Sanders (who was actually riding on his home track) failed to qualify for the Overseas Final to be held at the White City Stadium in London, England. Australasian Individual Speedway Championship
The Australasian Individual Speedway Championship was a Motorcycle speedway Final sanctioned by the FIM as a qualifying round for the Speedway World Championship between 1976 and 1981. History The Championship was introduced in 1976 as a qualifying round for Australian and New Zealand based Motorcycle speedway riders. Previously, the top place getters from the Australian and New Zealand championships had then gone on to qualify through the British qualifying rounds. An Australasian Championship had been run once previously in 1960, though it was not a World Championship qualifying round. The 1960 Championship, held at the Western Springs Stadium in Auckland, was won by Maury Dunn. In the years 1970, 1971 and 1972, an Australasian Grand Prix meeting was held at the Liverpool Speedway in Sydney on the original "D" shaped track and not the Motorcycle speedway, bike track that was built on the infield in 1974 when the Liverpool track surface was changed to asphalt. Larry Ross (speedway Rider)
Larry Ross (born 15 June 1954 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a former speedway rider who rode with the Wimbledon Dons, Belle Vue Aces, Halifax Dukes and the Bradford Dukes in the British League. Career summary Ross began riding at the Ruapuna track in Christchurch in 1972. He moved to England in 1975 and joined the Wimbledon Dons. He won the London Riders' Championship. In 1979 he was a member of the New Zealand team which won the World Team Cup. He was also a non-riding reserve for the 1979 World Final (won for a record 6th time by fellow Kiwi rider Ivan Mauger). In 1980 he was third in the British League Riders' Championship and the following year he rode in the World Championship final at Wembley. From 1977 to 1986 he rode in eight finals of the World Pairs Championship with Ivan Mauger and Mitch Shirra. Riding with Mauger he was runnerup in 1978 and in 1981. Tony Briggs (born 3 July 1967) is an Aboriginal Australian actor, playwright, screenwriter, and producer. He also is a former track and field athlete. He is best known for creating the stage play '' The Sapphires'' (later a 2012 film), which tells the true story of an Aboriginal singing girl group who toured Vietnam during the war. Michael John McKeon (born 4 March 1954) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career McKeon made his British leagues debut during the 1975 New National League season, where he rode for Coatbridge Tigers and Ellesmere Port Gunners. He continued to ride for Coatbridge during the 1976 and 1977 seasons, improving his average to 7.95. It was also in 1977 that McKeon won the first of his six Western Australian titles and he was signed by Halifax Dukes for the 1977 British League season.
