The 1980 Welsh Cup Final was the final of the 93rd season of the main domestic football cup competition in Wales, the Welsh Cup. The final was contested between Newport County and Shrewsbury Town over two legs. Newport County won 5–1 on aggregate, winning both legs. Vetch Field
The Vetch Field was a football stadium in Swansea, Wales. It was used for football matches and was the home ground of Swansea City until the club moved to the newly built Liberty Stadium in 2005. Opened in 1912, the ground held around 12,000 at the time of its closure, but upwards of 30,000 at its peak. As well as being home to the Swans, the Vetch also hosted games for the Wales national football team, with 18 internationals played at the Vetch between 1921 and 1988. Other sports also found a home at the Vetch, with 8 rugby league matches played there between 1990 and 1999. In 1960, local boy Brian Curvis beat the Australian boxer George Barnes at the Vetch to win the Commonwealth (British Empire) Welterweight title. Dave Gwyther
David Gwyther (born 6 December 1948) is a former Wales Under-23 international footballer. Career A tall, strong striker he began his career with Swansea Town and was their top scorer for four successive seasons scoring 60 goals in 216 matches. In 1971 Gwyther was selected for the Football Association of Wales tour of Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Malaysia but these matches were not classed as international cap matches. Stephen Robert Lowndes (born 17 June 1960) is a former Wales international footballer. Lowndes started his career at Newport County during the most successful period in the club's long history. Nigel Vaughan
Nigel Mark Vaughan (born 20 May 1959 in Caerleon) is a Welsh former professional footballer and Wales international. He gained ten international caps during his football career. Club career Newport County Vaughan started his playing career at his local professional side Newport County making 224 appearances and scoring 32 goals for the club. After leaving Caerleon Comprehensive School in 1975 he made his Football league debut against Rochdale as a left back at the age of 17 by manager Jimmy Scoular. Neil Bailey
Neil Bailey (born 26 September 1958) is an English former footballer. He played as a midfielder. He began his career at Newport County in the early 1980s, during the most successful period in the club's history. Bailey was part of the team that won promotion and the Welsh Cup and, in the subsequent season, reached the quarter-finals of the 1980–81 European Cup Winners' Cup. Bailey made 134 appearances for Newport, scoring seven goals. He joined his hometown club, Wigan Athletic, in 1983. He spent three years at Springfield Park, making 41 league appearances and scoring two goals. In 1986, Bailey joined Stockport County and went on to make a half-century of appearances for the Greater Manchester club. Keith Brian Oakes (born 3 July 1956) is an English former professional footballer. His clubs included Peterborough United, Newport County and Gillingham. At Newport County Oakes was selected in the 1980 Fourth Division PFA Team of the Year and captained the team that won promotion and the Welsh Cup and in the subsequent season reached the quarter-final of the 1981 European Cup Winners Cup. Richard Walden
Richard Walden (4 May 1948 – 19 November 2009) was an English professional footballer. A fullback, Walden played for Aldershot and Sheffield Wednesday before joining Newport County in 1978. Walden played over 400 league games for Aldershot. He scored the opening goal for Aldershot in the 1970–71 Football League Cup against Manchester United, though Aldershot went on to lose 3–1. Walden joined Newport County in 1978 and in doing so became the first player in British football to have the fee of £3,500 set by the transfer tribunal process. Gary Plumley (born 24 March 1956) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Newport County, Hereford United and Cardiff City, and in the Hong Kong First Division League for Happy Valley. A goalkeeper, Plumley made 187 appearances for Newport County in four spells with the club between 1976 and 1987.
