The 1980 Volta a Catalunya was the 60th edition of the Volta a Catalunya cycle race and was held from 3 September to 10 September 1980. The race started in Sant Carles de la Ràpita and finished at L'Hospitalet. The race was won by Marino Lejarreta of the Teka team. Marino Lejarreta
Marino Lejarreta Arrizabalaga (born 14 May 1957) is a retired Basque professional road racing cyclist. His biggest victory was capturing the 1982 Vuelta a España, a Grand Tour stage race, and he is the inaugural and record three-time winner of the Clásica de San Sebastián (1981, 1982, 1987), which is now considered a one-day classic. In 1989, Lejarreta captured the Volta a Catalunya repeating one of his first professional wins in 1980 at the same event. Career Lejarreta rode very well in the 1982 Vuelta, but initially finished 2nd to Ángel Arroyo while coming in just eighteen seconds ahead of Michel Pollentier. Following the race however, Arroyo and several other riders failed doping controls in one of the biggest scandals in Vuelta history making the young Basque rider the de facto winner of the race. José Viejo
José Luis Viejo Gómez (2 November 1949 – 16 November 2014) was a Spanish road cyclist who was professional from 1973 to 1982. He represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, where he finished in 37th place in the men's individual road race. Viejo won the 11th stage of the 1976 Tour de France with a time difference of 22 minutes and 50 seconds to the second-placed cyclist; this is the largest lead in the Tour de France after the Second World War. Alberto Fernández (cyclist)
Alberto Fernández Blanco (15 January 1955 - 14 December 1984) was a Spanish road racing cyclist. His son Alberto Fernández Sainz is also a road racing cyclist. Fernández was born in Cuena, Cantabria. As an amateur, he won the Spanish mountain bike championships, and turned professional in 1978. During his career, he was nicknamed ''el Galleta'' ("the Biscuit"), because the town where he lived, Aguilar de Campoo, had several biscuit factories. Fernández tested positive for the stimulant Methylphenidate (Ritalin) on stage 17 of the 1982 Vuelta a España. His best results came during the last two years of his career. He finished 10th overall in the 1982 Tour de France, and 3rd in his first appearance in the 1983 Giro d'Italia. He also finished 3rd in the 1983 Vuelta a España, improving to 2nd in 1984, only 6 seconds behind winner Éric Caritoux (the smallest winning margin in any of the Grand Tours). Sven-Åke Nilsson (born 13 September 1951) is a Swedish retired road racing cyclist. His sporting career began with CK Ringen Malmö. He was a professional cyclist from 1977 until his retirement in 1984. For half a decade early in his career he was among the strongest GC Contenders and often among the top 10 overall during the Tour de France while riding for the very strong Miko-Mercier squads, who also included riders like Christian Seznec, Raymond Martin and Joop Zoetemelk. In the 1978 Tour de France he finished 11th, in 1979 12th, 1980 7th and in 1981 he finished 8th. Faustino Rupérez Rincón (born 29 July 1956) is a Spanish former professional road racing cyclist who raced between 1979 and 1985. Ruperez is most famous for capturing the overall title at the 1980 Vuelta a España. He finished 4th in the 1979 Vuelta a España, won the 1981 Volta a Catalunya and finished 2nd overall at the 1984 Tour of the Basque Country behind Sean Kelly. Johan van der Velde (born 12 December 1956 in Rijsbergen) is a former Dutch cyclist. In the 1980 Tour de France, he won the young rider classification, also placing 12th in the general classification that year. He had been a racing cyclist for only a year. In the 1981 Tour de France, he took first place on the second and 21st stages, finishing 12th overall for the second year. He rode with TI–Raleigh in the Tour de France from 1979 to 1983 and the Panasonic team where he won Stage 5 and wore the Yellow Jersey for two days in the 1986 Tour de France.
