1980 U.S. Figure Skating Championships
The 1980 U.S. Figure Skating Championships took place at The Omni in Atlanta, Georgia. Medals were awarded in three colors: gold (first), silver (second), and bronze (third) in four disciplines – men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dancing – across three levels: senior, junior, and novice. The event determined the U.S. teams for the 1980 Winter Olympics and 1980 World Championships. James Santee
James "Jimmie" Santee is an American former competitive figure skater. He is the 1981 Golden Spin of Zagreb champion, 1982 Ennia Challenge Cup silver medalist, and 1983 Prague Skate silver medalist. Since 2006, he has served as the executive director of the Professional Skaters Association. Personal life James Santee was born 1962, the son of RoseMary and Neil Santee. His mother served as a judge for U.S. Figure Skating and his elder brother, David Santee, competed internationally in figure skating. In 1987, he married Jamie-Lynn Kitching, who won the silver medal at the 1981 World Professional Championships and performed with Disney on Ice as a principal skater from 1983–95. Peter Carruthers (figure Skater)
Peter W. Carruthers (born July 22, 1959) is a former American pair ice skater and a television skating analyst. Carruthers and his adopted sister, Kitty, are the 1984 Olympic Silver medalists, the 1982 World Bronze medalists, and four-time United States National champions from 1981 to 1984. Career The Carruthers team finished off the podium at the U.S. Championships in January 1979; however, their results improved during the following season. After winning the International St. Gervais in August 1979, they went on to win the Gold at the Nebelhorn Trophy and Silver at the 1979 Norton Skate (the inaugural Skate America). Kitty Carruthers
Caitlin A. "Kitty" Carruthers (born May 30, 1961) is a former American pair skater. With her adoptive brother, Peter Carruthers, she won a 1984 Olympic Silver medal, a 1982 World Bronze medal, and had been a four-time (1981-1984) United States National champion. Career The Carruthers siblings were coached by Ronald Ludington. They finished off the podium at the U.S. Championships in January 1979 but their results improved the following season. Randy Gardner (figure Skater)
Randy Gardner (born December 2, 1958) is an American former pair skater. Together with Tai Babilonia, he won the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships and five U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1976–1980). The pair qualified for the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Career Babilonia and Gardner began skating together when Babilonia was eight and Gardner ten. Their first coach was Mabel Fairbanks, and later they were coached by John Nicks. The pair became five-time U.S. national champions and won the gold medal at the 1979 World Championships. They were medal favorites at the 1980 Winter Olympics but were forced to withdraw due to a thigh injury to Gardner. Tai Reina Babilonia (born September 22, 1959) is an American former pair skater. Together with Randy Gardner, she won the 1979 World Figure Skating Championships and five U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1976–1980). The pair qualified for the 1976 and 1980 Winter Olympics. Career Babilonia and Gardner began skating together at eight and ten years old when skating coach Mabel Fairbanks needed a young pair team for a skating show in Culver City, California. Their coach from 1971 until 1980 was John Nicks. The pair became five-time U.S. national champions and won the gold medal at the 1979 World Championships. Elaine Zayak
Elaine Kathryn Zayak (born April 4, 1965) is an American former figure skater. She is the 1982 World champion and 1981 U.S. national champion. She competed at the 1984 Winter Olympics, placing 6th. Personal life Zayak was born and raised in Paramus, New Jersey. At age two, she lost three toes on her left foot as a result of a lawn mower accident. On the advice of her doctors, she began figure skating as physical therapy. Her left boot was stabilized with a wood mold to compensate for the irregularity in the shape of her left foot. Zayak attended Paramus High School and was awarded the Dial Award for the national high-school scholar-athlete of the year in 1982. Sandra J. "Sandy" Lenz-Jackson (born June 10, 1960 in Rockford, Illinois) is an American former figure skater. Lisa-Marie Allen (born September 16, 1960 in Glendale, California) is an American former figure skater. In 1979, she won gold at the inaugural Skate America (then titled ''Norton Skate''). She is also the 1978 Skate Canada International champion, 1975 Nebelhorn Trophy champion, 1979 NHK Trophy Silver Medalist, and a four-time U.S. national medalist (three silver, one bronze). Linda Fratianne
Linda Sue Fratianne (born August 2, 1960) is an American former figure skater known for winning two World Championship titles (1977, 1979), four consecutive U.S. Championships (1977–1980), and a silver medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics. Personal life Fratianne was married to ski racer Nick Maricich. Career Throughout her figure skating career, Fratianne was coached by Frank Carroll. She remained loyal whilst other switched to get a better deal. Fratianne became the first female skater to land two different types of triple jumps (toe loop and Salchow) in her free skating programs in 1976 at the U.S. National Championships. She might have been beaten by Barbie Smith who landed a triple but Carroll was aware of her abilities and he required that Fratiianne should land two triples.
