1980 Speedway World Team Cup
The 1980 Speedway World Team Cup was the 21st edition of the FIM Speedway World Team Cup to determine the team world champions. The final took place at the Vojens Speedway Center in Denmark. England won their eighth title to extend their record and the United States had their best performance to date finishing second. The defending champions New Zealand finished last in the British qualifying round. Speedway World Team Cup
The Speedway World Team Cup was an annual motorcycle speedway, speedway event held each year in different countries. The competition started in 1960 and was replaced with the Speedway World Cup in 2001. Format From 1960 until 1985 each team consisted of four riders and a reserve. A final meeting was held after qualifying rounds, the winner being decided on total points scored in that final meeting. In 1986, the teams that qualified for the 'final' raced three meetings, the winner of each meeting being awarded three points, second place awarded two points, and third place awarded a point. The total points gained over the three meetings determined the champion. In 1987, the three meeting system was used again, but this time the aggregate points scored by the individual riders were added together to determine the champion. 1988 saw the championship revert to the original format. Bruce Penhall
Bruce Lee Penhall (born May 10, 1957) is an American former professional motorcycle speedway racer who later starred in television and in film. He was the World Speedway Champion in 1981 and 1982 and rode for the successful Cradley Heath Heathens speedway team in the United Kingdom. He retired from speedway racing the night he won his second World Championship in 1982 in front of his home crowd at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. In his relatively short career Bruce Penhall appeared in 7 World Finals in all speedway competitions including the riding for the United States in the World Pairs Championship and the World Team Cup. Bruce Cribb
Bruce Brian Hoani Cribb (born 27 June 1946) is a former speedway rider from New Zealand, who rode in the United Kingdom for several teams in a career spanning over twenty years. Career Cribb was born in Palmerston North, where he began riding, before joining the Poole Pirates in 1965. In 1969 and 1970, he represented New Zealand in tests with England, and in 1971, he rode for Great Britain in matches with Poland. He won the New Zealand Championship in 1972, and was a member of the New Zealand team that won the World Team Cup in 1979. From the 1970s to 1988, he competed in ice speedway events and rode in two World ice speedway finals in 1978 and 1988. Larry Ross (speedway Rider)
Larry Ross (born 15 June 1954 in Christchurch, New Zealand) is a former speedway rider who rode with the Wimbledon Dons, Belle Vue Aces, Halifax Dukes and the Bradford Dukes in the British League. Career summary Ross began riding at the Ruapuna track in Christchurch in 1972. He moved to England in 1975 and joined the Wimbledon Dons. He won the London Riders' Championship. In 1979 he was a member of the New Zealand team which won the World Team Cup. He was also a non-riding reserve for the 1979 World Final (won for a record 6th time by fellow Kiwi rider Ivan Mauger). In 1980 he was third in the British League Riders' Championship and the following year he rode in the World Championship final at Wembley. Mitch Shirra
Mitchell Owen (Mitch) Shirra (born 27 September 1958 in Auckland, New Zealand) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who rode with the Coventry Bees, Reading Racers, Swindon Robins and Ipswich Witches in the British League. Career Shirra began riding at the Kembla Grange Speedway in New South Wales in 1973 at the age of 14 (he lied about his age in order to race as riders had to be at least 16 years old), although he would consider the Liverpool Speedway in Sydney as his home track. Early in his career this actually led him to ride as an Australian rider, though by the late 1970s when his true age and nationality was revealed he would be considered a New Zealand rider. In 1975, Shirra joined the Coventry Bees and was loaned out to the Coatbridge Tigers for a year. From 1976-1982 he rode for Coventry then transferred to the Reading Racers. Ivan Mauger
Ivan Gerald Mauger (4 October 1939 – 16 April 2018) was a New Zealand motorcycle speedway rider. He won a record six World Championships (Finals), a feat equalled only with the inclusion of the Speedway GP Championships by Tony Rickardsson of Sweden who won one World Final and five GP Championships. Mauger rode for several British teams – Wimbledon Dons, Newcastle Diamonds, Belle Vue Aces, Exeter Falcons, and the Hull Vikings. In 2010, Mauger was named an FIM Legend for his motorcycling achievements. Mauger and his wife of over 60 years, Raye, lived on Australia's Gold Coast. Gary Guglielmi
Gary Graham Christopher Guglielmi (born 14 February 1958 in Sydney, New South Wales) is a former Australian international Speedway rider who represented Australia in both test matches and in the World Pairs Championship. Guglielmi is of Italian descent. Career Guglielmi partnered fellow Sydney rider Billy Sanders in the 1982, 1983 and 1984 World Pairs Finals. The pair finished in 4th place in 1982 at their home track of Liverpool City Raceway in Sydney while improving to finish second in 1983 at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden. This could have easily been a World Championship win for Guglielmi had Sanders, who was otherwise undefeated on the day (and the track record holder at Ullevi), not fallen in turn two on lap one of Heat 16 when the Aussie pair faced the out of form West Germans Egon Müller and Karl Maier. Danny Kennedy (speedway Rider)
Daniel Gerard Kennedy (18 June 1958 – 14 June 1993) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career Kennedy made his British leagues debut during the 1976 British League season, where he rode for Newport Wasps. He also doubled up for Weymouth Wizards in the 1976 National League. He continued to double up, staying with Weymouth in the National League and hitting a 9.16 average during the 1978 National League season. In the British league, he rode for Bristol Bulldogs before joining Poole Pirates for the 1978 British League season. Michael John McKeon (born 4 March 1954) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. Career McKeon made his British leagues debut during the 1975 New National League season, where he rode for Coatbridge Tigers and Ellesmere Port Gunners. He continued to ride for Coatbridge during the 1976 and 1977 seasons, improving his average to 7.95. It was also in 1977 that McKeon won the first of his six Western Australian titles and he was signed by Halifax Dukes for the 1977 British League season. Ronald Nunan Preston (born July 15, 1958) is an American former international motorcycle speedway rider who was the European Junior Champion in 1979. __TOC__ Motorcycle racing career Born in Newport Beach, California, Preston began his racing career with the Poole Pirates in 1979 and spent two years there before moving to the Eastbourne Eagles in 1982.
