1980 Scottish League Cup Final
The 1980 Scottish League Cup Final was played on 6 December 1980, at Dens Park in Dundee and was the final of the 35th Scottish League Cup competition. The final was a Dundee derby contested by Dundee United and Dundee. Dundee United won the match 3–0 thanks to goals by Davie Dodds and Paul Sturrock (2). This was United's second senior trophy victory following success the previous season in the same tournament. Dundee's Billy Williamson was playing against his previous club. Background In the build up to the match ''The Glasgow Herald'' writer Jim Reynolds stated that he could not recall a major final in Scotland, including those contested by the Old Firm, which had attracted so much interest. The 1980–81 Scottish League Cup was the thirty-fifth season of Scotland's second Association football, football knockout competition. The competition was won by Dundee United F.C., Dundee United for a second successive season, who defeated Dundee F.C., Dundee in the Final. John Holt (footballer, Born 1956)
John Holt (born 21 November 1956) is a Scottish football coach and retired footballer. He played at either full-back or in midfield. He began his career with Dundee United, where he made more than 400 appearances between 1974 and 1987. Holt won three major domestic trophies with the club, the Scottish League Cup in 1979 and 1980 and the Scottish Football League Premier Division, Premier Division title in 1982-83 Scottish Premier Division, 1983. He also featured for United in many European runs including to the 1983–84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. Bobby Glennie
Robert "Bobby" Glennie (born 2 October 1957) is a Scottish former footballer, who played for Aberdeen, Dundee, Raith Rovers, Forfar Athletic, Arbroath and Elgin City. Cammy Fraser
Cammy Fraser (born 22 July 1957, in Dundee) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a midfielder. Fraser won league titles and cups with three Scottish clubs, collecting three trophies with Rangers and one each with Heart of Midlothian and Dundee. Fraser also played with Raith Rovers and Montrose in his career. Fraser left the senior game in 1993 to become player/manager at Lochore Welfare. Erich Schaedler
Erich Peter Schaedler (6 August 1949 – 24 December 1985), nicknamed "Shades", was a Scottish professional footballer of German extraction, who played as a left back. Schaedler was the son of a German POW. Born in Biggar, South Lanarkshire, Schaedler started his career at Stirling Albion in 1969 before moving to Hibernian later that year. It was at Easter Road that he would enjoy his greatest success, forming part of the "Turnbull's Tornadoes" side that won the Drybrough Cup then League Cup in 1972–73, and the Drybrough Cup in 1973–74. Bobby Geddes
Robert Geddes (born 12 August 1960) is a Scotland former footballer who played as a goalkeeper, and is currently the goalkeeping coach for Falkirk. A product of the Highland Football League, Geddes was goalkeeping coach at first club Dundee from 2006 until 2021, a position he previously held at city rivals Dundee United. Playing career Inverness-born Geddes began his professional career with Ross County, then a Highland League club. In 1977 Geddes transferred from Ross County to Dundee, and was part of the side who finished runners-up in the First Division and League Cup that season. In 1990 after ten years at Dens Park, Geddes moved west to Kilmarnock where in 1993 he was part of the promotion-winning side. Jim McLean
James Yuille McLean (2 August 1937 – 26 December 2020) was a Scottish football player, manager and director. He managed Dundee United between 1971 and 1993, becoming the longest-serving and most successful manager in the club's history, winning three major honours. He was also part-time assistant manager to Jock Stein with the Scotland national team. He led Dundee United to their only Scottish Football League title in 1982–83, following Scottish League Cup wins in 1979 and 1980. Under McLean, the club also lost in a further eight domestic cup finals. In European football, McLean's Dundee United reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1984 and the UEFA Cup final in 1987. Willie Pettigrew
William Haddow Pettigrew (born 2 October 1953) is a Scottish former footballer, who played as a striker for Motherwell, Dundee United, Hearts, Morton and Hamilton Academical. Pettigrew also represented Scotland and the Scottish League XI. Club career Pettigrew started his career with Hibernian, but left them for junior club East Kilbride Thistle after failing to make a first-team breakthrough. He joined Motherwell in 1972, where he had his most prolific goalscoring spell, averaging better than a goal every two league games. He ended the 1975–76 season as the highest scorer in the Scottish Premier Division at the age of 22. He repeated the feat when two years later in 1977–78. Graeme Payne
Graeme Payne (born 13 February 1956) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a winger. At Dundee United he played in two Scottish League Cup final winning teams. He was the first winner of the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year award. Playing career Club Graeme Payne was born in Dundee on 13 February 1956. While playing for St Columba's Boys Club, he joined Dundee United on schoolboy forms in May 1971. Eamonn Bannon
Eamonn John Bannon (born 18 April 1958) is a Scottish former internationalist footballer who played in midfield. His most successful seasons were with Dundee United where he won two league cups and the 1983 League Championship. Numerous runs with United in European football included playing in the 1983–84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. He began his career at Hearts in the mid-1970s before having a brief spell at Chelsea. He rejoined Hearts in 1988, where he remained for a further five years. David Narey
David Narey (born 12 June 1956) is a former Scottish international footballer who spent 21 years with Dundee United. With Narey United were Scottish champions once and league cup winners twice. He also played in numerous cup runs in Europe including playing in the 1983-84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final.
