1980 NCAA Division II Soccer Championship
The 1980 NCAA Division II Soccer Championship was the ninth annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. Lock Haven State defeated Florida International in the final, 1–0 (after one overtime period), to win their first Division II national title (the Bald Eagles won the Division III tournament in both 1977 and 1978). The final was played at Florida International University in Miami, Florida on November 29, 1980. NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship
The NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship is the annual tournament held by the NCAA to determine the top men's Division II college soccer program in the United States. It has been played annually since 1972; prior to then, all teams competed in a single class. The most successful program has been Southern Connecticut State, with six national titles. The current champion are Franklin Pierce, who won their first national title in 2022, defeating CSU Pueblo, 2–0, in the final. Format The Division II tournament is structured around four unbalanced Super Regionals from the eight NCAA regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast, and West). At least two and as many as six teams from each region are selected with no automatic qualifiers given. The selection criteria used is similar to that used in Division I, although one difference is that the RPI is replaced with the Quality of Winning Percentage Index, a more subjective measure. Eastern Illinois Panthers Men's Soccer
The Eastern Illinois Panthers men's soccer team represents Eastern Illinois University (EIU) as a member of the Ohio Valley Conference in NCAA Division I soccer. The Panthers play their home matches at Lakeside Soccer Field located directly south of the Lantz Arena complex on the EIU campus in Charleston, Illinois. Conference membership Eastern Illinois is currently a full member of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC), which did not sponsor men's soccer until the 2023 season. Before the OVC launched its men's soccer league, EIU was an associate member of the Summit League for men's soccer, and remains an associate of that conference in men's and women's swimming & diving. In 1982, EIU was one of the eight charter members of the Association of Mid-Continent Universities (AMCU) which changed its name to the Mid-Continent Conference (Mid-Con) in 1989 and became the Summit League in 2007. The 1980 NAIA Soccer Championship was the 22nd annual tournament held by the NAIA to determine the national champion of men's college soccer among its members in the United States and Canada. Three-time defending champions Quincy (IL) defeated Simon Fraser in the final, 1–0, to claim the Hawks' tenth NAIA national title. The final was again played at Sangamon State University in Springfield, Illinois. Qualification The tournament field remained fixed at ten teams. Two consolation games were eliminated, however,reducing the number of games from fifteen to thirteen. The 1980 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament was the 22nd organized men's college soccer tournament by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, to determine the top college soccer team in the United States. The San Francisco Dons won their fourth national title (their 1978 title and tournament wins were vacated by the NCAA) by defeating the Indiana Hoosiers in the championship game, 4–3, after one overtime period. Oddly, this was re-match of the 1978 tournament final won by San Francisco but later vacated by the NCAA. The final match was played on December 14, 1980, in Tampa, Florida, at Tampa Stadium for the third straight year. The Chico State Wildcats (also CSU Chico Wildcats and Cal State Chico Wildcats) are the athletic teams that represent California State University, Chico, located in Chico, California, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Tampa Spartans are the athletic teams that represent the University of Tampa, located in Tampa, Florida, in NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports. The Spartans compete as members of the Sunshine State Conference for all sports besides beach volleyball and track and field, which compete as independents. Hartford Hawks Men's Soccer
The Hartford Hawks are the NCAA Division I athletic teams of the University of Hartford, located in West Hartford, Connecticut. Hartford sponsors teams in eight men's and nine women's NCAA sanctioned sports. The men's and women's tennis teams were discontinued at the end of the 2016 season, and women's lacrosse was added. Overview On May 6, 2021, the University of Hartford Board of Regents voted to drop its athletic department to Division III. This plan will start with the university's formal application to the NCAA for reclassification in January 2022. Starting in 2022–23, Hartford would no longer award athletic scholarships to incoming students, and begin playing as a Division I independent.
