The Goa Legislative Assembly is the unicameral legislature of the state of Goa in India. The Assembly meets at the Goa State Legislative Assembly Complex in Porvorim, Bardez. The Eighth Goa Legislative Assembly consists of 40 members. The assembly is in charge of the budget, the Assembly appropriates money for social programs, agricultural development, infrastructure development, etc. It is also responsible for proposing and levying taxes. Indian National Congress (U)
The Indian National Congress (U) was a breakaway faction of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress (I), formed in July 1979 by D. Devaraj Urs, the then Chief Minister of Karnataka. Urs' explanation of the split was the return of Indira's son Sanjay Gandhi into the party fold. Urs took with him many legislators from Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa including future Union Ministers and Chief Ministers, Yashwantrao Chavan, Dev Kant Baruah, Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, A.K. Wilfred De Souza
Wilfred de Souza (23 April 1927 – 4 September 2015) was a surgeon and politician from Goa, India. He served as Goa's first Deputy Chief Minister of Goa and chief minister on three occasions when he was a member of the Indian National Congress and the Goa Rajiv Congress Party, during his third tenure. Political career Dr de Souza is credited, together with allies such as Govind Panvelcar, with the first Congress Party victory in Goa in 1980. From 1963 until 1979 Goan politics had been dominated by the regional parties, particularly the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party. In July 1998 Dr de Souza formed the Goa Rajiv Congress Party as a splinter group of the INC. Ramakant Khalap
Ramakant Khalap (born 5 August 1946) is an Indian politician from Goa, India. Khalap was a member of the 11th Lok Sabha. He is also former deputy Chief Minister of Goa. Early life Khalap was born at Mandrem, in Portuguese Goa to a Marathi couple, Dattaram and Satyabhama Khalap. He worked as a school teacher and later as a college lecturer. After this, he completed a law degree, and soon became a famous and successful lawyer of Goa. Political career After the death of then Chief Minister of Goa Dayanand Bandodkar, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party put their support behind Khalap to contest the By-Election from the Mandrem Assembly seat left vacant by death of Bandodkar.
