1980 Big East Men's Basketball Tournament
The inaugural Big East men's basketball tournament took place at the Providence Civic Center in Providence, Rhode Island, in March 1980. It is a single-elimination tournament with three rounds. Syracuse had the best regular season conference record and received the #1 seed and a bye into the semifinals. Georgetown defeated Syracuse in the championship game 87–81. Providence Civic Center
The Amica Mutual Pavilion (originally Providence Civic Center and formerly Dunkin' Donuts Center) is an indoor arena located in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It was built in 1972, as a home court for the emerging Providence College men's basketball program, due to the high demand for tickets to their games in Alumni Hall, as well as for a home arena for the then–Providence Reds, who played in the nearly 50-year-old Rhode Island Auditorium. Current tenants include the Providence Bruins, of the AHL and the Providence College men's basketball team. The center is operated by the Rhode Island Convention Center Authority, which also operates the Rhode Island Convention Center and Veterans Memorial Auditorium. Sleepy Floyd
Eric Augustus "Sleepy" Floyd (born March 6, 1960) is an American former professional basketball player. An NBA All-Star in 1987 as a Warrior, he is perhaps best known for his tenures for Golden State and Houston. Early life, family and education Floyd was born in Gastonia, North Carolina. He received the nickname "Sleepy" playing baseball in the fourth grade, when a spectator yelled "Get that kid out of the game. He’s sleeping." A guard, Floyd played competitively at Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia. David Russell (basketball)
David Lee Russell (born January 9, 1960) is an American former professional basketball player. From 1979 to 1983, he played four seasons under Lou Carnesecca and alongside Chris Mullin as a member of the St. John's Red Storm. In his four years, Russell averaged 14.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assist on 54.6% field goal shooting. Russell was drafted in the second round, 37th pick overall by the Denver Nuggets in the 1983 NBA draft. He was waived by the team that summer, and never played a game in the NBA. Russell went on to play six years in the Spanish Basketball League Liga ACB. He played for several teams, averaging 27.1 points, 6.9 rebounds and 0.7 assists on 58% shooting in his 127 games. He retired from professional basketball in 1989. Louis Orr
Louis McLaughlin Orr (May 7, 1958 – December 15, 2022) was an American basketball player and coach. He played professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and became a college basketball coach. Orr was the head coach at Bowling Green State University from 2007–2014 and at Seton Hall from 2001 until 2006. He was formerly an assistant at Xavier University, Providence College and his alma mater Syracuse University, before getting his first head coaching job at Siena College. He was also an assistant coach at Georgetown under his former New York Knicks teammate Patrick Ewing. Playing career Orr attended Withrow High School where he was coached by Charles Cadle. John Thomas Duren (born October 30, 1958) is an American retired professional basketball player.
