1979–80 Minnesota North Stars Season
The 1979–80 Minnesota North Stars season was the 13th season in North Stars history. The previous year's merger with the Cleveland Barons began to pay off as the North Stars finished with a winning record for the first time in seven years, and finished in third place in the Adams Division with 88 points. Former Baron Al MacAdam led the team in scoring with 93 points and captured the Bill Masterton Trophy. In the playoffs, the North Stars swept the Toronto Maple Leafs in three games in the preliminary round. In the quarterfinals, they shocked the hockey world by eliminating the 4-time Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens in seven games. The upset earned the North Stars a trip to the semi-finals, where their cinderella run came to an end when they fell in five games to the Philadelphia Flyers. The 1979–80 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 54th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League. The club was coming off a first-place finish in the Smythe Division in the 1978–79, despite finishing with a 29-36-15 record. James Herold Dobson (born February 29, 1960) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player and coach. He played in 12 National Hockey League (NHL) games as a forward with the Minnesota North Stars, Colorado Rockies, and Quebec Nordiques. Career Dobson was drafted 90th overall by the Minnesota North Stars in 1979 after scoring 38 goals for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). He returned to junior and scored 66 goals in 1979-80 and was named to the WHL first all-star team before spending his first pro season with the Oklahoma City Stars of the Central Hockey League (CHL). Over this time he was recalled for a few games in Minnesota but did not fit into the team's long term plans. Neal Broten
Neal LaMoy Broten (born November 29, 1959) is an American former professional ice hockey player. A member of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team that won the gold medal at Lake Placid in 1980, Broten was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame in 2000 having appeared in 1,099 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season games from 1981 to 1997 with the Minnesota North Stars, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils and Los Angeles Kings.
