1979–80 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1979–80 Chicago Black Hawks season was the 54th season of operation of the Chicago Black Hawks in the National Hockey League. The club was coming off a first-place finish in the Smythe Division in the 1978–79, despite finishing with a 29-36-15 record. In the 1979 playoffs, the Black Hawks were swept by the New York Islanders in the quarter-finals. Off-season During the off-season, the Black Hawks named Eddie Johnston as their new head coach, as Bob Pulford stepped down to focus on his general manager duties. Johnston was previously the head coach of the New Brunswick Hawks, Chicago's AHL affiliate, in 1978–79, leading the team to a 41-29-10 record. Johnston was also a former goaltender, playing in the NHL from 1962-1978, earning a 234-257-80 record with a 3.25 GAA in 592 career games while playing for the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Black Hawks. Smythe Division
The NHL's Smythe Division was formed in 1974 as part of the Clarence Campbell Conference. The division existed for 19 seasons until 1993. It was named in honour of Conn Smythe, who was a longtime owner, general manager, and head coach in the league. It is the forerunner of the NHL's Northwest Division and Pacific Division. Hartford Whalers
The Hartford Whalers were a professional ice hockey team based for most of its existence in Hartford, Connecticut. The club played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 until 1979, and in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1997. Originally based in Boston, the team joined the WHA in the league's inaugural season, and was known as the New England Whalers throughout its time in the WHA. Douglas Allan Hicks (born May 28, 1955) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. Jean Savard
Jean Savard (born April 26, 1957) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He played 45 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks and Hartford Whalers between 1977 and 1980. Biography Savard was born in Verdun, Quebec. As a youth, he played in the 1969 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with a minor ice hockey team from Verdun. He placed junior hockey in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, winning the scoring championship in 1976–77. In 1977, Savard was drafted by both the National Hockey League and World Hockey Association. Savard signed with the Chicago Black Hawks of the NHL, and played 42 games with Chicago and its farm team, the Dallas Black Hawks. Savard was claimed by the Hartford Whalers in the expansion draft and played one further game in the NHL. Savard played his final full season with the Binghamton Whalers in 1980–81. John Garrett (ice Hockey)
John Murdoch Garrett (born June 17, 1951) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender and television sports commentator. He played in the World Hockey Association from 1973 to 1979 and then in the National Hockey League from 1979 to 1985. After retiring from playing he turned to broadcasting. The Winnipeg Jets are a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg. The team competes in the National Hockey League (NHL) as a member of the Central Division in the Western Conference, and is owned by True North Sports & Entertainment, playing its home games at Canada Life Centre. Bobby Hull
Robert Marvin Hull OC (born January 3, 1939) is a Canadian former ice hockey player who is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. His blonde hair, skating speed, end-to-end rushes, and ability to shoot the puck at very high velocity all earned him the name "The Golden Jet". His talents were such that one or two opposing players were often assigned just to shadow him. The 1980 NHL Entry Draft was the 18th NHL Entry Draft. It was held at the Montreal Forum. 1979 NHL Expansion Draft
The 1979 NHL Expansion Draft was held on June 13, 1979. The draft took place to fill the rosters of the National Hockey League's new teams for the 1979–80 season: the Edmonton Oilers, Hartford Whalers, Quebec Nordiques and Winnipeg Jets. These four teams had joined the NHL after a merger agreement was reached with the World Hockey Association (WHA). As many WHA players also had their rights held by NHL teams, those NHL teams were allowed to reclaim their players. In order to keep the NHL teams from plundering all the talent from the WHA-turned-NHL teams, each incoming franchise was allowed to protect up to two goaltenders and two skaters.
