1979 Walker Cup
The 1979 Walker Cup, the 27th Walker Cup golf match, was played on 30 and 31 May 1979, at Muirfield, Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland. The event was won by the United States 15½ to 8½. The United States had an 8½ to 7½ lead after the second day foursomes. In the final round of 8 singles, Great Britain and Ireland had just one win, by Allan Brodie, while the United States won the other 7 matches for a convincing win. Format The format for play on Wednesday and Thursday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played. Each of the 24 matches was worth one point in the larger team competition. If a match was all square after the 18th hole extra holes were not played. Rather, each side earned ½ a point toward their team total. The team that accumulated at least 12½ points won the competition. If the two teams were tied, the previous winner would retain the trophy. Muirfield
Muirfield is a privately owned golf links which is the home of The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. Located in Gullane, East Lothian, Scotland, overlooking the Firth of Forth, Muirfield is one of the golf courses used in rotation for The Open Championship. Muirfield has hosted The Open Championship sixteen times, most recently in 2013 when Phil Mickelson lifted the trophy. Other past winners at Muirfield include Ernie Els, Nick Faldo (twice), Tom Watson, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Henry Cotton, Alf Perry, Walter Hagen, Harry Vardon and Harold Hilton. Brian Marchbank
Brian Marchbank (born 20 April 1958) is a Scottish professional golfer. He had a successful amateur career in which he won Boys Amateur Championship and the British Youths Open Championship and played in the 1979 Walker Cup. He made over 400 appearances on European Tour without winning, his best finish being when he was runner-up in the 1982 State Express English Classic Amateur career Marchbank was a successful amateur golfer. In 1975 he won the Boys Amateur Championship at Bruntsfield Links, beating Sandy Lyle by one hole in the 36-hole final, making a 12-foot birdie putt at the final hole. In 1978 Marchbank won the Lytham Trophy. He led by 5 strokes after three rounds and, despite a final round of 77, won by three strokes from Peter Thomas. Later in the year he won the British Youths Open Championship, with two rounds of 68 on the final day giving him the championship by three strokes from Hugh Evans. Hal Evan Sutton (born April 28, 1958) is an American professional golfer, currently playing on the PGA Tour Champions, who achieved 14 victories on the PGA Tour, including a major championship, the 1983 PGA Championship, and the 1983 Tournament Players Championship. Sutton was also the PGA Tour's leading money winner in 1983 and named Player of the Year. Professional career Born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana, Sutton was a promising player at its Centenary College, and was named ''Golf Magazines 1980 College Player of the Year. Jay Sigel
Robert Jay Sigel (born November 13, 1943) is an American professional golfer. He enjoyed one of the more illustrious careers in the history of U.S. amateur golf, before turning pro in 1993 at age 50, when he became a member of the Senior PGA Tour, now known as the PGA Tour Champions. Early years Born and raised in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Sigel grew up playing golf at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. James M. Holtgrieve (born December 26, 1947) is an American amateur golfer who had a brief professional career. Holtgrieve was born in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended the University of Missouri and Washburn University.
