The 1979 U.S. Women's Open was the 34th U.S. Women's Open, held July 12–15 at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Connecticut. Jerilyn Britz won her first LPGA Tour event (and only major), two shots ahead of runners-up Debbie Massey Debbie Massey (born November 5, 1950) is an American professional golfer. Before joining the LPGA Tour, Massey worked as a skiing instructor. She was LPGA rookie of the year in 1977. 1979 LPGA Tour
The 1979 LPGA Tour was the 30th season since the LPGA Tour officially began in 1950. The season ran from February 15 to November 3 and consisted of 35 official money events. Nancy Lopez won the most tournaments, eight, and led the money list with earnings of $197,489. There were five first-time winners in 1979: Jerilyn Britz, Beth Daniel, Vicki Fergon, Pat Meyers, and Penny Pulz. This was the first year that the Peter Jackson Classic (now called the Canadian Women's Open) was classified as an LPGA major. Hall of famer Judy Rankin gained her 26th victory in August, which was her final tour win. The Women's Kemper Open saw the first ever five-way playoff in LPGA Tour history. Sandra Palmer (golfer)
Sandra Palmer (born March 10, 1943) is an American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1964 and won 19 LPGA Tour events, including two major championships, during her career. Amateur career Palmer was born in Fort Worth, Texas, but grew up (and first played golf) in Bangor, Maine. She attended North Texas State University where she was a cheerleader and Homecoming Queen. Palmer attended North Texas State University, where she was runner-up in the 1961 National Collegiate Championship. While at North Texas State, Palmer joined Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a four-time winner of the West Texas Amateur and won the Texas State Amateur in 1963. Professional career Palmer turned professional and became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1964. Laura Zonetta Baugh (born May 31, 1955) is an American professional golfer, who played the LPGA Tour for 25 years. She is a published writer and golf broadcaster. Early life Baugh was born in Gainesville, Florida. Joyce Kazmierski (born August 14, 1945) is an American professional golfer. Kazmierski played college golf at Michigan State University, winning the national individual intercollegiate golf championship in 1966. Kazmierski played on the LPGA Tour from 1968 to 1986. Donna Caponi
Donna Caponi-Byrnes (born January 29, 1945) is an American LPGA Tour professional golfer. She became a member of the tour in 1965 and won four major championships and 24 LPGA Tour career events. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Amateur career Caponi was born in Detroit, Michigan. She started playing golf at the age of 5. Susie Berning
Susie Maxwell Berning (born July 22, 1941) is a retired American professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1964 and won four major championships and eleven LPGA Tour victories in all. She also competed under her maiden name Susie Maxwell from 1964 to 1968. Jo Ann Washam (May 24, 1950 – December 6, 2019) was an American professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. Washam was born in Auburn, Washington. She played college golf and basketball at Washington State University, where she also joined the women's fraternity Alpha Gamma Delta. Sally Little
Sally Little (born 12 October 1951) is a South African-born professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1971 and won 15 LPGA Tour events, including two major championship, during her career.
