The 1979 Skate America (officially called Norton Skate) was held in Lake Placid, New York. This was the inaugural event. It was the test event for the upcoming 1980 Winter Olympics. Lake Placid, New York
Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, southwest of Plattsburgh. Lake Placid, along with nearby Saranac Lake and Tupper Lake, comprise what is known as the Tri-Lakes region. Lake Placid hosted the 1932 and the 1980 Winter Olympics. Susanna Driano (born May 28, 1957) is an American-Italian former competitive figure skater who competed for Italy. She is the 1978 World bronze medalist, a two-time European bronze medalist (1976, 1980), and a six-time Italian national champion (1975–80). Personal life Driano was born on May 28, 1957, in Seattle, Washington, to a Canadian-born mother and Italian father. Career Driano competed internationally for Italy. In the 1974–75 season, she won the first of her six consecutive Italian national titles and was sent to her first ISU Championships; she finished sixth at the 1975 Europeans and ninth at the 1975 Worlds. Richard John Dalley (born August 2, 1957) is an American former competitive ice dancer. Born in Detroit, Michigan, he competed in ice dance with Carol Fox at the 1984 Winter Olympics. Michael Seibert (figure Skater)
Michael Seibert (born January 1, 1960) is an American figure skating choreographer and former competitive ice dancer. With Judy Blumberg, he is a three-time World bronze medalist (1983–85), the 1980 Skate Canada International champion, the 1981 Skate America champion, and a five-time U.S. national champion (1981–85). They also competed at two Winter Olympics. In 2003, Seibert was one of the winners of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. Judith Ann Blumberg (born September 13, 1957) is an American former competitive ice dancer. With Michael Seibert, she is a three-time World bronze medalist (1983–85), the 1980 Skate Canada International champion, the 1981 Skate America champion, and a five-time U.S. national champion (1981–85). Personal life Blumberg was born in Santa Monica, California, and is Jewish. She is the daughter of a clothing manufacturer and grew up in Tarzana, California. Robert A. Wagenhoffer (July 5, 1960 – December 13, 1999) was an American figure skater. As a single skater, he was the 1977 Nebelhorn Trophy champion, the 1980 NHK Trophy silver medalist, the 1981 Skate America silver medalist, and a two-time U.S. national medalist.
