1979 Scottish League Cup Final (December)
The 1979–80 Scottish League Cup Final was played on 8 December 1979 and replayed on 12 December 1979. It was the final of the 34th Scottish League Cup competition, and it was a New Firm derby contested by Dundee United and Aberdeen. The first match ended in a goalless draw, but Dundee United won the replay 3–0 thanks to goals by Willie Pettigrew (2) and Paul Sturrock. United's victory earned them a place in the 1980–81 UEFA Cup competition. Match details Dundee United were delayed arriving at Hampden due to heavy traffic and flooding, and reached the stadium just 30 minutes before kick-off. Although both teams created chances, it was the two sides' defences that dominated the match. United's manager Jim McLean felt his side had not played at their best, but that Aberdeen had, and that gave him confidence for the replay. Derek Stark (footballer)
Derek Stark (born 19 November 1958) is a Scottish retired footballer who played as a defender. He played for Dundee United – his only senior club – from 1976 to 1985, when he retired through injury at the age of 26. Although he was a part-time footballer for most of his career, he won the Scottish Premier Division title in 1982–83 and the Scottish League Cup twice. Doug Rougvie
Douglas Rougvie (born 24 May 1956) is a Scottish former footballer, who played mainly for Aberdeen and Chelsea. Rougvie played in one international match for Scotland, in 1983. Playing career Aberdeen A hard-tackling and committed defender, Rougvie played for Aberdeen between 1975 and 1984, one of the most successful periods in their history. After debuting for Aberdeen in an away friendly against Persepolis of Iran in summer '74, he made 279 appearances (28 as substitute) and scored 21 goals, winning the Scottish league championship in 1979–80 and 1983–84, the Scottish Cup in 1982, 1983 and 1984, the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1983 and the European Super Cup in 1983. Stuart Kennedy
Stuart Robert Kennedy (born 31 May 1953) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a right-back for Falkirk and Aberdeen. He made eight appearances for the Scotland national team. Club career Kennedy was born in Grangemouth. He moved to Aberdeen in 1976 for £30,000 and featured prominently in Aberdeen's greatest period of success. A hard-working, skilful player, he won every major domestic honour in his time in the North-East, namely the League in 1979–80, the Scottish Cup in 1981–82, and the 1976–77 League Cup. Bobby Clark (footballer, Born 1945)
Robert Brown Clark (born 26 September 1945) is a Scottish football player and coach. Clark, who played as a goalkeeper, spent most of his playing career with Aberdeen. He also played for Queen's Park, Washington Whips, San Antonio Thunder and Clyde. Clark played 17 times for Scotland and represented the Scottish League. He later became a coach, mainly working in New Zealand and the United States. Jim McLean
James Yuille McLean (2 August 1937 – 26 December 2020) was a Scottish football player, manager and director. He managed Dundee United between 1971 and 1993, becoming the longest-serving and most successful manager in the club's history, winning three major honours. He was also part-time assistant manager to Jock Stein with the Scotland national team. He led Dundee United to their only Scottish Football League title in 1982–83, following Scottish League Cup wins in 1979 and 1980. Under McLean, the club also lost in a further eight domestic cup finals. In European football, McLean's Dundee United reached the European Cup semi-finals in 1984 and the UEFA Cup final in 1987. He became a Dundee United director in 1984 and served as chairman between 1988 and 2000, when he resigned after assaulting a reporter. Steve Murray (footballer)
Steve Murray (born 9 October 1944) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a midfielder. He spent the majority of his career in the north-east of Scotland, with Dundee and Aberdeen. Murray also enjoyed success with Glasgow club Celtic and represented Scotland once. He later managed Forfar Athletic and Montrose. Playing career Murray began his career in the early 1960s with Dundee, spending six years at Dens Park and picking up runners-up medals in both domestic cup competitions, making around 200 appearances in total. In 1970, he became Aberdeen's record signing in a £50,000 deal, missing the 1970 Scottish Cup Final due to being cup-tied but winning a solitary Scotland cap in 1971, coincidentally in a fixture played at Pittodrie. George Fleming (footballer, Born 1948)
George Fleming (born 22 September 1948) is a Scottish former footballer who played in midfield. With Dundee United he won the 1979-80 Scottish League Cup. Career Fleming made 132 league appearances for Hearts between 1966 and 1972. In 1972 he joined Dundee United and won the Scottish League Cup in December 1979. That was his last season at United. He made 258 league appearances for the Tayside club. He took a player/coach role at St Johnstone from 1980 to 1983. He subsequently managed Arbroath in the mid-1980s. Graeme Payne
Graeme Payne (born 13 February 1956) is a Scottish former footballer who played as a winger. At Dundee United he played in two Scottish League Cup final winning teams. He was the first winner of the Scottish PFA Young Player of the Year award. Playing career Club Graeme Payne was born in Dundee on 13 February 1956. While playing for St Columba's Boys Club, he joined Dundee United on schoolboy forms in May 1971. When Jim McLean became Dundee United manager later that year, he placed great emphasis on the club developing its own youth players, and Payne would be one of the first to break through. John Holt (born 21 November 1956) is a Scottish football coach and retired footballer. He played at either full-back or in midfield. He began his career with Dundee United, where he made more than 400 appearances between 1974 and 1987. Holt won three major domestic trophies with the club, the Scottish League Cup in 1979 and 1980 and the Premier Division title in 1983. He also featured for United in many European runs including to the 1983–84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. Eamonn Bannon
Eamonn John Bannon (born 18 April 1958) is a Scottish former internationalist footballer who played in midfield. His most successful seasons were with Dundee United where he won two league cups and the 1983 League Championship. Numerous runs with United in European football included playing in the 1983–84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. He began his career at Hearts in the mid-1970s before having a brief spell at Chelsea. He rejoined Hearts in 1988, where he remained for a further five years. David Narey
David Narey (born 12 June 1956) is a former Scottish international footballer who spent 21 years with Dundee United. With Narey United were Scottish champions once and league cup winners twice. He also played in numerous cup runs in Europe including playing in the 1983-84 European Cup semi final and the 1987 UEFA Cup Final. Although best remembered as a central defender, he occasionally played in midfield. After leaving United he won the 1994-95 Scottish League Cup with Raith Rovers.
