1979 Liberty Bowl
The 1979 Liberty Bowl was the 21st edition of the college football bowl game, held at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tennessee, on Saturday, December 22. Part of the 1979–80 bowl game season, it matched the Tulane Green Wave and the Penn State Nittany Lions, both independents. In a game without a touchdown, Penn State won 9–6. Teams Penn State The 1979 Penn State squad finished the regular season with a record of 7–4 and losses against Texas A&M, Nebraska, Miami and Pittsburgh. The appearance marked the third for Penn State in the Liberty Bowl, and the school's 18th overall bowl game. Liberty Bowl
The Liberty Bowl is an annual American college football bowl game played in late December or early January since 1959. For its first five years, it was played at Philadelphia Municipal Stadium in Philadelphia before being held at Atlantic City (New Jersey) Convention Hall in 1964. Since 1965, the game has been held at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium in Memphis, Tennessee. Because of the scheduling of the bowl game near the end of the calendar year, no game was played during calendar years 2008 or 2015, while two games were played in calendar years 2010 and 2016. Since 2004, the game has been sponsored by Memphis-based auto parts retailer AutoZone and officially known as the ''AutoZone Liberty Bowl''. Previous sponsors include St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (1993–1996) and AXA Financial (1997–2003). History A. F. 1979 Tulane Green Wave Football Team
The 1979 Tulane Green Wave football team represented Tulane University in the 1979 NCAA Division I-A football season. The team was led by Larry Smith. The Green Wave played home games in the Louisiana Superdome. The team finished with a record of 9–3 and played in the 1979 Liberty Bowl, losing 6–9 to Penn State. The offense scored 318 points while the defense allowed 179 points. Two members of the Green Wave team were drafted into the National Football League. The Wave opened the season by smashing Stanford 33-10, spoiling John Elway's collegiate debut. In the 77th edition of the Battle for the Rag, Tulane beat LSU 24–13 in what was LSU coach Charles McClendon's final regular season game after 18 seasons. Edward Peter Murray (born August 29, 1956) is a Canadian former professional football player who was a kicker in the National Football League (NFL) for the Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles, Minnesota Vikings and Washington Redskins. He played college football at Tulane University.
