1979 Copa Interamericana
The 1979 Copa Interamericana was the 7th. edition of the Copa Interamericana. The final was contested by Paraguayan Club Olimpia (champion of 1979 Copa Libertadores) and Salvadoran club FAS (winner of 1979 CONCACAF Champions' Cup). The final was played under a two-leg format in February–March 1980. The first leg was held in Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador San Salvador (; ) is the capital and the largest city of El Salvador and its eponymous department. Copa Interamericana
The Copa Interamericana ( en, Interamerican Cup) was an annual club football competition contested between a representative from North America (CONCACAF) and South America (CONMEBOL). Established in 1969, it was discontinued in 1998 after CONCACAF clubs, particularly those from Mexico, began participating in CONMEBOL competitions. The competition was intended to be contested between the winners of the North American CONCACAF Champions Cup and the South American Copa Libertadores tournaments, although the participants varied at times. The competition was usually contested over a two legged tie, with a playoff or penalty kicks if necessary. However, it was common for several consecutive editions to go unheld. Juan Francisco Barraza Flores (March 12, 1935 – December 17, 1997) was a Salvadoran football player and manager. He is widely regarded one of the best Salvadoran footballers of all time. Career Born in the district of San Miguel as the son of Maria de la Cruz Barraza and Juan de Dios Flores, he attended Dr Antonio Rosales primary school. Early years Barraza began playing soccer in grade school and he joined C.D. Corona when he was eight years old. Due to extreme hardship, he began playing with balls made out of rags. José Norberto Huezo Montoya (born 6 June 1956) is a retired football player from El Salvador who represented his country at the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain. Club career Huezo started his career at UES and played for ANTEL before joining Atlético Marte in 1976. He then played in Mexico, but returned to Marte only to try his luck abroad again when he moved to Spanish side Palencia. He also played for Cartagena FC but returned to Marte again in 1985. Pedro Ramón Cubilla Almeida (25 August 1933 in Paysandú, Uruguay – 16 March 2007 in Montevideo, Uruguay) was a Uruguayan professional footballer and manager. Player career Pedro Cubilla started his career as a professional playing for Uruguayan clubs Nacional, Peñarol, Rampla Juniors and Liverpool de Montevideo in the Primera División Uruguaya. Rogelio Wilfrido Delgado Casco (born 12 October 1959) is a retired football central defender from Paraguay. Club career At the club level, Delgado played for Olimpia Asunción, where he won the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1979, and six Paraguayan league titles. Osvaldo Aquino (born 28 January 1952 in San Lorenzo, Paraguay) is a former football midfielder/winger and coach. Playing career Aquino started his career in the youth divisions of Atlético Triunfo and went on to play for several other teams from the San Lorenzo area before signing for Guaraní of the Paraguayan 1st division in 1973. Alicio Ignacio Solalinde Miers (born February 1, 1952) is a Paraguayan former footballer who played as a forward and works as a coach. Career Born in Villeta, Solalinde began playing football for local side Olimpia de Villeta. He also played for Club Libertad and Club River Plate, but enjoyed his greatest success with Club Olimpia where he became a key player by winning several national and international titles such as the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1979.
