1979 British Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1979 British motorcycle Grand Prix was the eleventh round of the 1979 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 10–12 August 1979 at the Silverstone Circuit. Race summary The 500cc British Grand Prix would be one of the closest races in Grand Prix history. The race began with Barry Sheene, Kenny Roberts and Wil Hartog breaking away from the rest of the field. At the midpoint of the race, Hartog fell off the pace as Sheene and Roberts continued to battle for the lead. They continued to swap the lead throughout the 28 lap event with Roberts winning ahead of Sheene by a narrow margin of just three-hundreds of a second. Minutes before the start of the race, Roberts' Yamaha blew a seal and sprayed the bike with oil. His crew managed to replace the seal in time but, Roberts went to the starting line with his gloves coated with oil, causing his hand to slip on the throttle during the race. The 1979 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 31st F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Season summary A season of changing fortunes in the 500cc class saw American, Kenny Roberts capture his second crown in the face of the Suzuki-mounted opposition. In the 50cc class, Eugenio Lazzarini won every race in which he finished to take the championship. Angel Nieto dominated on a Minarelli to take his seventh world championship. Kork Ballington would repeat as double world champion in the 250cc and 350cc classes for Kawasaki. Defending champion Roberts was injured in a pre-season test but came back to win round two in impressive fashion. His rivals also suffered from bad luck. Alain Michel (born 23 February 1953) in Montelimar is a French sidecar racer and motorcycle preparer. He is the only French World Sidecar Champion. The career of Alain Michel began on 2 wheels 1972. He also won this year's Cup Four Seasons category on a Honda 450 and finished in second place in the championship of France 500 national. Considering this experience as inconclusive, he embarked on three wheels 1975 and in 1976 began to a career Grand Prix category sidecar in which he obtained some good results. His first Grand Prix victory, he won in France at Paul Ricard in 1977, with Gérard Lecorre as a passenger. That year would be marked by a classic race in the rain at Silverstone (England) but would result in abandonment. They finished 5th in the World Championship. John Parkins
John Parkins (1571–1640) was an English merchant and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1621 to 1622. Parkins was the son of William Parkins of East Shilvinghampton near Portesham in Dorset. He became a merchant in Dorchester. On 1 October 1619 he became bailiff of the town for the third time. In 1621, he was elected Member of Parliament for Dorchester but served only for a year. He became bailiff again on 4 October 1624. On 10 July 1625 the ship ''Francis Sandars'' was taken by French pirates and as a result Parkins lost kerseys to the cost of £700. On 6 October 1629 King Charles granted Dorchester a new charter and Parkins became first mayor under this charter. Parkins died at the age of about 69. Parkins married Rachel Chappell of Exeter as his second wife.
