1979 BDO World Darts Championship
The 1979 Embassy World Darts Championship was the second World Professional Championships. Having been held the previous year at the Heart of the Midlands Club in Nottingham, the event moved to Jollees Cabaret Club in Stoke-on-Trent where it was to remain until 1985. The tournament was held between 2 February and 9 February and had been expanded from 16 players to 24. The eight seeded players each received a bye into the second round. The format also changed from a straight matchplay (legs) to sets. Each set was the best of 5 legs. - For matches in the opening rounds the matches were best of three sets, - best of five for the quarter-finals and semi-finals, with the final being best of 9 sets, split over an afternoon and evening session with the play-off for third held in between. Defending champion, Leighton Rees of Wales again progressed to the final where he met John Lowe in a repeat of the inaugural championship. Jollees Cabaret Club
Jollees was a live music and cabaret venue in Longton, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom. The venue was re-established in March 2016, after having closed in 1992. The original venue was opened in October 1973 and was the largest capacity cabaret venue in the UK in the 1970s. It also hosted the World Professional Darts Championship from 1979 to 1985. Opening The venue had previously been a restaurant and bowling alley. Construction began in late 1972, after the venue's alcohol licence application had been approved, and cost Β£200,000. The opening night was attended by 1,600 people, including World Cup winning England international footballers Geoff Hurst and Gordon Banks. Merseybeat group The Fourmost and comedians Little and Large were the headliners. The club used a jester as its logo. Doug McCarthy
Douglas "Doug" McCarthy is an English former professional darts player who played in British Darts Organisation events in the 1970s and 1980s. Career McCarthy played in four BDO World Darts Championships. In 1979, he beat Charlie Ellix in the first round but lost in round two to John Lowe. In 1980, McCarthy beat Conrad Daniels in round one before losing to Jocky Wilson in the second round. In 1981, McCarthy lost in the first round to Ceri Morgan and 1982 he beat Jerry Umberger in round one but lost in round two to Bobby George. McCarthy also played in four World Masters tournaments but failed to reach the quarter-final stage. McCarthy also represented England on 19 occasions and was a member of the England Team including Eric Bristow and John Lowe which won the Europe Cup in 1978. Conrad Daniels
Conrad Edward Daniels (born September 11, 1941 from New Jersey) is a former American professional darts player who was active from the 1970s to the 1980s. Darts career Daniels was an elite competitor who won or finished near the top of dozens of individual and team events in his career. In 1975, Daniels won both the US Open and North American Open, and reached world #3 in the 1975-76 ratings of the European Darts Organization. He was also a member of the US team that took 2nd place at the 1979 World Cup, and a member of the team that finished in 2nd place at the 1980 Elkadart Nations Cup. Daniels was one of the first American players to seriously challenge British darters at their own game. Tony Sontag
Anthony Sontag (2 March 1956 – 24 July 2018) was an English professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career Sontag reached the semi-finals of the 1978 British Open, losing to the eventual winner Eric Bristow. He reached the semi-finals of the 1978 Winmau World Masters, defeating Doug McCarthy and Charlie Ellix before losing to Tony Brown. Terry O'Dea
Terence "Terry" O'Dea (3 May 1945 – 18 May 2021) was an Australian professional darts player who competed in the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career O'Dea rejoined of the BDO in March 1978. O'Dea played in ten successive BDO World Darts Championships with his best run coming in 1982 and 1986 where he reached the quarter-finals. O'Dea also played in four Winmau World Masters, World Masters tournaments, reaching the quarter-finals in 1984. He appeared on the UK television show Bullseye (UK game show), Bullseye presented by Jim Bowen in 1984 where he scored 300 points (in 9 darts) for charity. He appeared two years later and scored 305. Cliff Lazarenko (born 16 March 1952) is an English former professional darts player. Ceri Rhys Morgan (22 December 1947 – 29 February 2020 ) was a Welsh professional darts player who competed in the British Darts Organisation (BDO) events in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Career Morgan made his World Championship debut in 1979, beating Barry Atkinson in the first round before losing to Tony Brown in the second round. In 1980, Morgan reached the quarter-final, where, as the number 8 seed, he began his campaign in the second round where he defeated Alan Grant before losing to Cliff Lazarenko. Barry Atkinson
Barry Atkinson (14 December 1937 – 13 December 2021) was an English-born Australian professional darts player. Nicknamed Bazza, he competed in events of the 1970s and 1980s. Darts career Atkinson played in the 1977 Winmau World Masters where he lost in the last 16 stage to Paul Reynolds who went on to reach the final and lose to Eric Bristow. Alan Glazier
Alan James Glazier (21 January 1939 – 12 November 2020) was an English professional darts player. He used the nickname "The Ton Machine" and was noted for his all-black outfits. Career Glazier was one of the first darts players who turned professional in an attempt to make a full-time living from the game of darts as it grew in popularity during the 1970s. He was one of the players who appeared in the very first World Professional Darts Championship in 1978, losing to Alan Evans in the first round. In 1979, he reached the quarter-finals at the World Championship before being beaten by Tony Brown.
