1979 Big Ten Conference Football Season
The 1979 Big Ten Conference football season was the 84th season of college football played by the member schools of the Big Ten Conference and was a part of the 1979 NCAA Division I-A football season. The 1979 Ohio State Buckeyes football team compiled an 11–1 record, won the Big Ten championship, lost to USC in the 1980 Rose Bowl, and was ranked No. 4 in the final AP and UPI polls. Quarterback Art Schlichter led the team with 2,246 yards of total offense, finished fourth in the Heisman Trophy voting, and was selected as a first-team All-American by the NEA and ''The Sporting News''. Offensive guard Ken Fritz was a consensus All-American. Earl Bruce, in his first year as head coach, was selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. John Arbeznik
John C. Arbeznik (born June 13, 1957) is a former American football player. He played college football for the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1979 and was a first-team All-Big Ten Conference offensive guard in both 1978 and 1979. University of Michigan A native of University Heights, Ohio, Arbeznik attended Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland before enrolling at the University of Michigan in 1975. He played college football as an offensive guard for Bo Schembechler's Michigan Wolverines football teams from 1976 to 1979. At six feet, three inches, and 240 pounds, Arbeznik won a spot in the starting lineup in 1977, but missed most of the season after sustaining a knee injury. Vlade Janakievski
Vlade Janakievski (born April 10, 1957) is a former American football placekicker for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Janakievski was born in North Macedonia while it was part of Yugoslavia and moved to the United States with his parents in 1967 at the age of 10. He graduated from Whitehall Yearling high School in 1976, where he was the placekicker on the football team. He was a walk-on player from the soccer team who handled the placekicking duties for the Buckeyes in the 1977-1980 seasons. Vincent Scott Skillings (born May 3, 1959) is a former American football cornerback in the Canadian Football League for the Montreal Alouettes and Montreal Concordes. He played college football at Ohio State University. Early years Skillings attended Derry High School, where he practiced football and track. He was a two-way player at running back and cornerback. Todd Bell
Todd Anthony Bell (November 28, 1958 – March 16, 2005) was an American football safety in the National Football League for the Chicago Bears during the early 1980s. College After graduating from Middletown High School, in Middletown, Ohio, Bell was given a scholarship to play for Ohio State University. He was a four-year starter at defensive back, playing as a roverback, a hybrid of the strong safety and linebacker positions. His biggest moment at Ohio State was a game-winning touchdown in his junior year against rival Michigan on November 17, 1979. Michael Anthony Joseph Jolly (born March 19, 1958) is a former American football player. He played professional football as a defensive back for the Green Bay Packers from 1980 to 1983. He also played college football for the University of Michigan from 1976 to 1979. Jim Laughlin
James David Laughlin (born July 5, 1958) is a former American football player. He played college football as a linebacker for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Laughlin was the eighth pick in the fourth round of the 1980 NFL Draft (91st overall) by the Atlanta Falcons. Playing career Laughlin played high school football at Charles F. Brush High School in his hometown of Lyndhurst, Ohio. He graduated from Charles F. Brush High school in 1976. As a team captain during his senior year of 1979 at Ohio State, Laughlin (along with Mike D'Andrea) had a share in a blocked punt against Michigan, which was returned for what eventually proved to be the winning touchdown by Todd Bell.
