The 1978 Tour of the Basque Country was the 18th edition of the Tour of the Basque Country cycle race and was held from 3 April to 7 April 1978. The race started in Leitza and finished at the Alto de Uncella. The race was won by José Antonio González Linares of the Kas team. Alberto Fernández (cyclist)
Alberto Fernández Blanco (15 January 1955 - 14 December 1984) was a Spanish road racing cyclist. His son Alberto Fernández Sainz is also a road racing cyclist. Fernández was born in Cuena, Cantabria. As an amateur, he won the Spanish mountain bike championships, and turned professional in 1978. During his career, he was nicknamed ''el Galleta'' ("the Biscuit"), because the town where he lived, Aguilar de Campoo, had several biscuit factories. Fernández tested positive for the stimulant Methylphenidate (Ritalin) on stage 17 of the 1982 Vuelta a España. His best results came during the last two years of his career. He finished 10th overall in the 1982 Tour de France, and 3rd in his first appearance in the 1983 Giro d'Italia. José Luis Viejo Gómez (2 November 1949 – 16 November 2014) was a Spanish road cyclist who was professional from 1973 to 1982. He represented his native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, West Germany, where he finished in 37th place in the men's individual road race. Viejo won the 11th stage of the 1976 Tour de France with a time difference of 22 minutes and 50 seconds to the second-placed cyclist; this is the largest lead in the Tour de France after the Second World War. He is now the manager of Spanish UCI Professional Continental outfit Fuerteventura–Canarias. Kas (cycling Team)
Kas was a Spanish-based professional cycling team which was active from 1958 until 1979 and again for three years in the 1980s. Its name was derived from the name of the principal sponsor of the team, the soft drinks manufacturer, Kas. The team was principally based in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. Its riders typically wore a jersey that consisted of yellow and blue. The musical term alto, meaning "high" in Italian (Latin: ''altus''), historically refers to the contrapuntal part higher than the tenor and its associated vocal range. In 4-part voice leading alto is the second-highest part, sung in choruses by either low women's or high men's voices. In vocal classification these are usually called contralto and male alto or countertenor. Such confusion of "high" and "low" persists in instrumental terminology.
